"Tie a Tie" Activity - January 28, 2020

  • Why it is important to dress professionally?

- It's important to dress professionally because it can develop good impressions from a company you're trying to apply at. When dressed professionally, you'll gain more opportunities to promote yourself within a company and build your image.

  • Describe what is professional dress (include images - you may use from Google images)

- Professional dress means wearing a suit – slacks or skirt, button shirt, and a matching jacket. Men should wear a tie and dress shoes, and women should wear stockings and closed-toe shoes. Suits should be in neutral colors such as grey, navy, brown or black.

  • How do you feel about learning how to tie a tie in class?

- It was nice learning because I never knew how to tie a tie and whenever there is an occasional event, I'll know how to tie myself. Also, I am able to pass on my knowledge and teach those who don't know how to tie a tie.

"Be A Tourist" Field Trip - January 23, 2020

1. What was your assigned site? How did you feel you did in your presentation?

-My assigned site was the Ricardo Bordallo Governor's Complex at Adelup. I feel like my group and I did a good job at presenting about The Latte of Freedom and Adelup. It was quite windy but we managed to say our parts efficiently.

2. Which was your favorite site? Why? What was most surprising thing about your tour?

-My favorite site was Ritidian Point because there was an amazing ocean view and it was fun to go inside the cave and explore. One thing that surprised me about Ritidian was the beach because the water was super clear and there were plenty of waves.

3. Copy the list of 8 sites and write important facts about each site. Please indicate if it's your first time visiting any of these 8 sites.

1. Two Lovers Point

-It is 368 feet from the top and operated by Calvo Enterprised Inc.

2. Senator Angel Santos Latte Memorial Park

-Lattes vary from 1 foot to 16 feet high and the Japanese caves were constructed by Chamorros, Okinawa, and Korean forced laborers. It was my first time visiting this area.

3. Plaza de Espana

-The main structure in the complex was known as Casa Govierno(Governor's Palace) and during the Naval Administration, it became the headquarters of the government and residence to the Governor. It was my first time visiting this area.

4. Ft. Apugan

-It was built in the 1800's and was named after Governor Manuel Muros wife, Donna Agueda Del Camino. It was my first time visiting this area.

5. Asan Bay Overlook

-The engravings are in honor of those who suffered and sacrificed their lives and Guam was invaded by the Japanese on July 21, 1941.

6. Ricardo Bordallo Governor's Complex at Adelup

- The Latte of Freedom was completed on March 31, 2010 and it is currently 70 feet tall.

Lunch at Micronesia Mall

7. Ritidian/Guam National Wildlife Refuge

-It is the Northernmost Point of the island and it used to be a thriving Chamorro village. It was my first time visiting this area.

8. South Pacific Memorial Park

-"The Tower of Peace" depicts hands clasped in prayers and the Japanese soldiers hid in caves to protect themselves from American naval bombardment and attacks.

4. From a tourist perspective, what are positives and negatives of Guam's scenic and historic sites? What improvements can be made to attract more tourists?

-It's good that Guam provides many historical sites to tour so tourists can learn the history of our island. It's discouraging to see some sites polluted with trash though. Some improvements include making the sites clean from trash and advocate the use of technology to search sites on Guam.

5. How was the tour bus and driver? Transportation provider: Lam Lam Bus; Mr. Mike Santos, driver

- The bus was very nice because the seats were comfortable and the air con was cool. I really appreciate our bus driver for he drove us to all the sites and he was nice too.

6. How was the overall field trip? What would you do differently? What changes would you like to see for this field trip?

-I really enjoyed the field trip because I got the chance to receive and out of the classroom experience and I got to spend it with my classmates and friends. I would probably make sure to take more pictures and videos so I could relive the moment. A cool change to see is to do activities at the sites like games or trivia.

Japan Autumn Festival - November 18, 2019

What?

On November 16. 2019, the 40th annual Japan Autumn Festival was held at Ypao Park from 2 P.M. to 9 P.M. The Japan Autumn Festival began in 1977 in a small hotel parking lot owned by Japanese individuals who wanted to provide an opportunity for Japanese children on Guam to experience a traditional festival. I was there to help out people with the booths. I worked the Ring Toss booth.

So What?

I thought this was a good experience for me as a student because I got to work outside of the classroom. I got to interact with Japanese people and work besides them. Also, I was able to work with my classmates so it was fun because I didn't get bored while working on my shifts. I feel that my service was good because for majority of the event, I was constantly working at booths and only took a break to either eat or get a drink. It was a hard, long day and I was tired at the end but it was worth it because I had fun.

Now What?

If I were to make any changes, I would definitely want to arrive on time. I arrived a little late so I had to clock in by myself while everyone was already working. I'd also want to try working the other booths. I was mostly working the game booths so it'd be cool to sell drinks or sell food. That's what I would want to change if I were to do it again.

Total Service Learning hours: 7 hours. I worked from 2:00 P.M. to 9 P.M.
