Alex Shallenberger graduated in 2017 with Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Percussion Performance from West Chester University while also studying piano as a minor instrument. He also studied Percussion Performance for two years at Kansas State University under Dr. Wayne Goins and Dr. Kurt Gartner.
Over his 7 years in Academic Percussion, Alex developed a well-balanced skill set in the percussion world. He has performed with top university-level Wind Ensembles, Orchestras, Jazz Bands, Jazz Combos, percussion ensembles, chamber groups, and specialty performance groups outside academia. He has also spent three summers at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, performing with Staff Concert Bands, Orchestras, and Jazz Ensembles. This past summer, he toured with the Blue Lake International Jazz Ensemble and played big-band jazz for communities in France and Germany.
Alex's passion lies in sharing his experiences and knowledge with students to help advance their personal musical development to whatever end they desire. He has taught percussion and piano lessons privately for over six years and taught the Middle School Percussion Sectional Class at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for three seasons.
Currently, Alex is working as a public educator for Pittsburgh Public Schools, helping to revive student-led instrumental music performances.
