'Archaic Symbol', 2021
48" x 60"
Paint on canvas with handstitched elements, hanging grommets.
LEGEND: This piece came into being while imagining what I might create to furnish a long hospital hallway. The twin amorphous shapes here are the closest element of that initial inspiration. It's the first piece I created that I feel is truly perfect of itself. The paint is housepaint and all of the colorful marks you see are incidental, made from using the raw canvas as a drop cloth for many weeks. The handprints were inspired by a heartbreaking scene in the film 'Samson & Delilah' in which Delilah discovers her handmade artwork being sold in a faraway gallery for thousands more dollars than what she and her Grandmother were ever paid for producing it.
'Balance, Focus, Luck, Chaos' or 'Seasons of the Soul', 2024
48" x 72"
Handsewn tapestry consisting of neon scraps, and marbled fabrics. With hanging loops.
LEGEND: For me, a breakthrough tapestry for its simplicity and beauty. Conceptions of each of the themes mentioned in the title of this piece. The beautiful marbled fabric was gifted me by Mike Curtis, of Uniun, Somerville, MA. It is currently on display with Kate Swanson of Fletcher Rd Design, Burlington, VT.
‘All-Dream Landscape’
48”x68”
Quilted textile on batting
LEGEND: This one feels like art that ‘i’ like to view and see. Proud of how soft and sexy this piece turned out. Lots of secret corners and places for the mind to adventure. By working with the last scraps of the years portfolio, I mine a rich vein of improvisation/sketching/arranging.
'Looking in the Mirror', 2023
42"x47" (with obvious cut-out)
Hand quilted with dental floss, canvas, spraypaint, graphite.
One joyous, contemplative piece. Featuring words for what you already knew, 'You are unbelievably gorgeous.' 'You are absurdly beautiful.'
‘Used to Play Ice Hockey, Now I Rollerblade’, 2023
42” x 48”
Quilted textile, formed from scrap patches, of t-shirts, found fabrics, etc.
LEGEND: Another breakthrough piece coming midway through 2023. First instance of incorporating quilt batting to a textile collage and I can't look back. Finally, discovered the real 'feel' of the artwork I love to create. Something cozy, something durable, something beautiful, magical, mysterious. I found this piece contained all of this and then some. It's a part of my private, personal collection.
'Outdoor Recess', 2023
48" x 62"
&
'Naptime', 2023
42" x 48"
Quilted textiles, gouache painted characters, on upcycled bedsheets
LEGEND: A pair of quilts evoking childhood, made with soft materials, meant for cozy times & fun. The characters were spontaneously painted and carefully arranged into the broader composition. 'Outdoor Recess' is currently in the collection of Zander Auerbach, 'Naptime' is Paula Kalil's yoga blanket.
'Supergraphics 1, 2, & 3', 2024
48" x 72"
Quilted textile collages, featuring all handsewn elements, and spraypaint
This 'Supergraphics' series (term coined by Maryann Thompson) are expressive, fun, interventions in the quilting/painting medium. I'm accessing the 'broad strokes' of the form, here ~ playing and exploring. Reminiscent of the bold prints done by Sister Corita Kent, whose work inspires my own in many ways. 'Supergraphics 1' is currently part of Maryann Thompson's private collection.
'Mino-Bimaadiziwin (The Good Life)', 2024
48" x 72" with hanging stretcher bar
Mino-Bimaadiziwin, means living the Good Life. A life in which deed and word go together, hand-in-hand. This quilt is my depiction of this Anishinabe/Ojibwe thought as a spiraling of good fortune emanating down from a thundercloud.
'Diana's ‘Diana’s Moon Garden’ 2024
48”x68”
Quilted textile with snippets of previous painting
I made this piece at the behest of a dear friend Diana Perkel. We’ve had a long history of friendship 10+ years, lots of fun, lots of joys, and plenty of sorrows peppered in. We planted a garden together in 2015 ✨💁♂️🌿🌸✨This piece is to add to her personal collection of very fine art, & was an honor to create for her 😌.
'O Enchanted Life' 2024
96”x72”
Quilted textile collage, batting, scraps~
A nice big ‘sketch’ almost…This piece came together piece by piece, full improvisation with no pre-conceived idea for dinosaurs or dreaming or dragonflies or any of the elements that make up this composition. Just lovely~ The blood, the volcano, everything here as if from a dream. Stretcher bars recall formal 'stretched-canvas' painting, and subvert the notion...
‘Beginner’s Mind’ 2024
48”x72”
Quilted textile collage, batting scraps, fabric printed images,
Commission for my Father with the guiding theme/idea the zen concept of ‘beginner’s mind.’ 'Acting without a preconceived notion of how to proceed.' Perfect attitude for artmaking. I love how soft and ‘airy’ this piece turned out~ lot’s of room for imagination- like a breeze blew in and scattered the elements of this piece the way they landed. I tried only to use scraps from previous work to produce this one- limiting what palette I work with often unlocks new creative pathways 🙃🙂.
