Choosing a tutor for your child or for yourself can be a big decision, and each teacher will have different styles and abilities. Here is what you can expect from me.
A private tutor is not the same as a class teacher. That's why I believe in building a trusting and equal relationship as the way to begin learning effectively.
All my lessons are personalised to the student and I will go at your pace, not mine. I do not use set Powerpoint slides as that limits our ability to explore a topic together
Finally, I believe Science should not be thought of as a standalone subject. I prefer to give real-world context to science and maths ideas wherever possible, and spend time helping you to understand WHY, not just HOW things are done.
I will arrive at your house with a laptop, my own working materials and relevant textbooks. I do not provide workbooks, however I have range of textbooks and study aids that I am happy to lend. Students should be ready to learn with their own work materials, including pen, pencil, ruler and calculator. In order to help me understand your needs it is often helpful if the student can also have their own school work to hand. Access to the internet is useful but not essential.
I will set up our lesson using Google Meet and will send you a link to use before the lesson. There is no need to install any special software, you simply need a laptop or desktop (mobile devices are less suitable) with a webacam and modern web browser. Students should be logged on and ready to learn at the specified start time.
In order to ensure good progress, I usually recommend the student completes additional work set by me during the week, especially for GCSE and A-Level students. I use Google Classroom to set work and also share class notes and any other useful information. I see homework as the student's responsibility and a way to encourage independent learning, therefore I will often ask students to mark their own work and feed back to me in lesson time.
I send out an invoice at the end of every calendar month. You can pay by BACS or by card via a secure link.
Having taught at one of the best regarded grammar schools in the country, I have comprehensive knowledge of the Physics GCSE and A-Level courses, and have a strong track record of helping bright pupils attain the highest grades.
I have also taught Chemistry, Biology and Maths up to GCSE, and can offer support for other STEM subjects such as Engineering and Design Technology
I worked in industry for a decade, in the design and manufacture of large motors and generators, leading the engineering design on multi-million pound projects including wind turbine test beds, electric propulsion for the Royal Navy, and oil & gas.
