There is something elusive or slippery about these textures. Harmonies vary from simple triads to small clusters dissonant, suspended, extended triads. The voices of Danilevski's Ensemble Syntagma twist and float above these sustained tones, joined now and then by the pitter patter of rain and the flow of water as in 'One Moon, Many Reflections'. In Zen Buddhism, a koan is a riddle or paradox, meant to tease out the foolishness of an overactive logic. The parallels in these musical works seem to be brevity, simplicity, and a kind of unconcerned bluntness that is both provocative and comforting.

The result is stunning and breathtaking. There is much to tell about indefinite Danilevski’s compositions, words do little good here, I’m afraid – just open ears up and listen, and you open up to the special timeless musical world of Alexandre Danilevski.

Aber es kann wiederum als besonderes Qualitätskriterium der Musik gelten, dass diese auch schlicht in ihrem klanglichen “So-Sein” zutiefst zu beeindrucken vermag… Im einleitenden ‘Lauda’ wie in der viersätzigen ‘Ode an die Traurigkeit’ dominieren sphärische Mischklänge, entspringt üppige lineare Qualität aus der feinen Interaktion von fünfköpfigem Instrumentalensemble und zwei diskreten Vokalsolisten. Diese Konstellation gerät intensiv, ist klanglich weich, gelungen gemischt und zeitigt in ihren besten Passagen Momente mystischer Weite. ‘Revelation’ für solistisches Violoncello lotet in nur elf Minuten Spielzeit eine bemerkenswerte technische und expressive Varianz aus, besticht dazu immer wieder mit entschieden gesetzten rhythmischen Impulsen. Die ‘Antiphones for recorder quartet’ schließlich zeigen Danilevski als profunden Kenner der Blockflöten-Idiomatik – was er in den drei nicht gerade ausladenden Sätzen dem Flanders Recorder Quartet auf den Leib schreibt, ist absolut bemerkenswert, vor allem das beschließende Allegretto fordert manche spieltechnische Finesse heraus.
