I am a Graduate Research Assistant at the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP), University of Lausanne, located in Chavannes-près-Renens, Switzerland. I have held this position from September 2019 to April 2025. I am affiliated with the Administration et Institutions research unit. I hold a PhD in Public Administration (2025), an MA in Political Science (2018), and a BA in Political Science (2016).
Beyond my primary role, I have served as a contributor to various publications and am an active peer reviewer for academic journals, including International review of administrative sciences, Regional & federal studies, Administration & society, Cogent social sciences, Lex Localis – journal of local self-government, Information polity, Public money & management, and State & local government review. From late 2022 to 2023, I managed the IDHEAP research unit 'Administrations et institutions' after my former supervisor's (Prof. Andreas Ladner) untimely passing. I also led the IDHEAP COVID taskforce in 2020-21 and was a member of the research committee at IDHEAP from 2019 to 2024.
My work includes contributing to important publications such as the book 'Dynamics and Issues of Local Autonomy' (Edward Elgar Publishing, March 2025), which I co-authored. I also authored a chapter on 'The politics of public administration' in the 'Edward Elgar Handbook on the Politics of Public Administration' (October 2022). I have published research on the Local Autonomy Index (LAI 2.0) in Regional & Federal Studies, and explored the link between local autonomy and democratic legitimacy in Local Government Studies. Other notable publications include a report on the Self-rule index for local authorities for the European Commission and a systematic review on social capital and health in SSM - Population Health, which is noted as being in the Top 10 cited articles of the journal in the last years. I have been involved in significant research projects, including the Local Autonomy Index in collaboration with the European Commission and the OECD, and the Swiss Municipal Monitoring project with the ZHAW, and have collaborated with institutes in Japan and South Korea. My work has also been featured in the media through video and press interventions.
My academic journey began with a BA in Political Science obtained in 2016 from the Université de Lausanne, followed by an MA in Political Science from the same university in 2018. I undertook an academic stay at the Copenhagen Business School in 2017, focusing on international business and politics. I completed my studies with a PhD in Public Administration from IDHEAP, University of Lausanne, obtained in March 2025. My doctoral thesis synthesised research findings on local autonomy across 57 countries and the politico-administrative governance of municipalities in Switzerland.
My primary areas of interest are Public Administration, Local Government, Democratic Governance and Legitimacy, Politicisation, Comparative Public Administration, Local Autonomy, and Decentralization. My current research activities, particularly on the Local Autonomy Index and Swiss Municipal Monitoring, directly reflect these core interests by providing empirical data and comparative analysis on local governance. My expertise includes the specific context of Swiss politico-administrative institutions at the federal, cantonal, and communal levels. This background and my research focus allow me to delve deeply into how local governments function and interact within broader political systems. I have also contributed to teaching at the university level (MA, MPA, CAS courses), covering topics like Swiss Politics and Institutions, Territorial Governance and Federalism, and methods for constructing MA theses in Public Administration, which enhances my understanding and ability to communicate complex concepts in these fields.
I possess dual Swiss and Dutch nationality and am proficient in multiple languages, holding C2 native proficiency in English, French, Dutch, and Polish, good working knowledge (B2/C1) of German, and beginner knowledge (A1) of Russian. My technical skills include proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as SPSS statistical software and R programming language.
