Alexander Staffa earned an Associate of Science degree from Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, where his interest in science and experimentation first took form. Afterward, he attended Metropolitan State University of Denver to continue building his academic foundation. After spending 29 years in Colorado, he relocated to Amesbury, Massachusetts, to pursue his long-term goal of completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He has already applied to several universities in The Bay State to continue his education and reach this milestone.
While preparing for the next step in his studies, he is living near Boston, Massachusetts. Originally from Louisville, Colorado, he now resides in a coastal area renowned for its vibrant tourism and welcoming atmosphere. Being surrounded by people from all over the country and beyond has helped him build strong communication skills and develop a deeper appreciation for the diversity of human experiences. This environment has also allowed him to adapt to a new setting while balancing his personal responsibilities and academic goals.
His dedication to chemistry stems from a deep curiosity about how the world functions at its most basic level. Growing up in Louisville, Colorado, he was surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes and a wealth of outdoor activities. At the age of five, he began skiing and quickly developed a lifelong passion for the sport. He had access to some of Colorado’s most popular ski destinations, including Copper Mountain, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Arapahoe Basin, where he learned to navigate a variety of terrains and challenges.
While studying in Steamboat Springs—famous as “Ski Town, USA”—he spent significant time on the slopes. Between 2013 and 2016, he managed to ski approximately 100 days each year across three seasons while maintaining his academic responsibilities. With 297 named trails covering nearly 2,965 acres, the area provided endless opportunities for him to refine his technique and enjoy the outdoors.
For him, skiing represents much more than a sport. It is a personal connection to nature, offering peace, perspective, and physical challenge. The snow-covered peaks, fresh air, and sense of freedom remind him of the natural world's beauty. Skiing has also helped him build physical endurance, balance, and strength, while teaching him determination and confidence. The discipline learned on the slopes translates into other parts of his life, particularly in his studies and work. Skiing also created lasting memories with family and friends, strengthening his sense of community and appreciation for shared experiences.
His interest in outdoor activities extends well beyond skiing. Alex Staffa enjoys dirt biking, hiking, and tubing, all of which allow him to explore different aspects of the natural world. Through Dungeons & Dragons, he engages with others socially and collaboratively, whether playing online or in person. The game challenges him to analyze situations, plan strategies, and adapt quickly—skills that connect directly to his analytical thinking in chemistry. It also provides a healthy balance between his scientific focus and his imaginative side.
