I've been working on this model whenever I have time on the side. My goal is to fix all the defects, and add any details true to the real car that I can make. I'm 3D printing custom parts and printing a a custom made decal sheet for this process.

It was originally a diecast, meaning it came prebuilt, but it was riddled with paint defects and build errors. So with the amount of time and effort I spent taking it apart and fixing everything, it would have been easier to build a normal kit. (Unfortunately none exist of this specific car)

The first thing I did was take it all apart and sand down all the suspension and floor in order to add carbon fiber decals. The stock floor and suspension had a really cheap looking fake carbon texture molded into it. It was super tough to sand off.

Next I applied the carbon fiber decals. They came as an aftermarket product, and I had to cut each bit to fit to the shape of the floor and suspension.

It never goes on perfectly, but I use decal setting solutions like Micro Set and Micro Sol

They soften the decal and get it to conform to the contours properly

After that, I had to airbrush clearcoat on it to cover the micro scratches and give a proper gloss finish.

I used Mr.Color GX100. I mixed it in a ratio of 1:3 clear to thinner. Very strong stuff, but it'll always clear old residue out of the airbrush properly.

I gave it a good few good coats to properly get a uniform surface and cover any tiny gouges from sanding.

Next step will be sanding and polishing the clearcoat to get rid of the orange peel.

I used Micro Mesh sanding pads and Tamiya finishing compounds to perfect the finish.

Really proud of how the rear wing turned out. This is the only part I've fully finished but more are soon to come!

The stock steering wheel was completely inaccurate. No idea what the manufacturer was thinking, they made zero effort here.
So I plan to 3D print this and a few other parts for ultimate accuracy.
I'm modelling in SketchUp since it's the program I'm most familiar with but I also know Blender and ZBrush

The TV pod was covered in the fake carbon texturing too. I had to remake all of it because the orange markings were part of it too

I put some Tamiya putty on it to help fill the tiny grooves, sanding that down for a uniform texture

Very tricky to get it to conform in one piece, as the side profile is teardrop shaped

In order to get the proper shade of florescent orange on the TV pod, I was lucky enough to own decals from an old kit in the exact color. I cut these out and put them onto the TV pod. Unless I had the exact color in paint, its impossible to achieve this shade by mixing colors since it's so bright and pure.

However, these were an absolute nightmare to work with. The decal sheet was all dried and brittle so even just cutting the decal would cause it to flake and crack apart.

So I had to cut its rough shape, let it soak in a decal softening solution for a few hours, and only then could I cut the edges properly.
