If you want a rugged, isolation-focused pair of headphones designed specifically for the high-impact environment of electronic drumming, choose Alesis DRP100; if you need precise, studio-grade monitoring with extended frequency range and detachable cabling for critical mixing or recording, choose Monoprice Over Ear Closed‑Back.
• Alesis DRP100: Built for extreme audio isolation and durability with a sweat-proof silicone headband, but features a fixed 6-foot cable that limits flexibility compared to modular options. This is the pick for drummers and performers who need gear that survives daily physical use.
• Monoprice Over Ear Closed‑Back: Delivers superior accuracy with 50mm XXL drivers and a massive 10Hz–36kHz frequency response, yet includes a heavier build at 0.53 kg which may feel substantial during marathon sessions. This is the choice for producers and engineers seeking reference-quality sound in a closed-back design.
• Who it's for: The Alesis serves the active musician on the floor, while the Monoprice caters to the stationary producer in the booth.
The Alesis DRP100 is not just another pair of headphones; it is a tool engineered for a very specific type of performance: playing electronic drums. When you are hitting pads hard, your head moves, you sweat, and you need gear that won't slip or break. The design philosophy here is entirely about stability and protection. The most distinct feature I see in the data is the sweat-proof silicone headband. This isn't a standard foam or leather pad; it is a material chosen specifically to maintain grip and comfort even when you are in the middle of an intense practice session. If you have ever tried to wear standard headphones while drumming and found them sliding down your nose or getting soaked with perspiration, the DRP100 solves that exact problem.
Audio-wise, this unit prioritizes isolation above all else. The over-ear design provides what the manufacturer calls "extreme audio isolation." In a drum kit context, this is non-negotiable. You need to hear your own click track and the digital sounds clearly without letting the ambient noise of the room bleed in, or vice versa. The 40mm full-range drivers deliver a wide frequency response up to 20,000 Hz, which is standard for consumer audio, but the real magic is how they handle the transient spikes of a snare hit or kick drum. They keep the sound contained within the ear cups so you can focus entirely on your rhythm. The included 1/4-inch adapter also shows that Alesis thought about stage setups where you might plug into a larger jack rather than a small computer headphone port.

However, this specialization comes with trade-offs. The cable is a permanent 6-foot (1.8m) attachment with a 3.5mm stereo mini-plug. While this length is generous for most home setups, it is not detachable. If the cable gets damaged, you cannot simply swap it out; you would need to replace the entire unit. Furthermore, the weight of 12.8 ounces makes it lightweight, which is good for long wear, but the build is focused on being "rugged" rather than "audiophile grade." If your primary goal is to mix a complex orchestral score or master a track where every nuance between 10Hz and 30kHz matters, the frequency response ceiling of 20,000 Hz might feel limiting compared to other professional tools. This is the perfect companion for the drummer who wants to play private practice for hours without disturbing the house, but it is less ideal for someone who needs to edit audio on a computer workstation with surgical precision.
The Monoprice Over Ear Closed‑Back represents a different category entirely: the professional studio reference monitor. When you look at the specifications, the numbers tell a story of accuracy rather than endurance. The headline feature here is the 50mm XXL membrane driver. That is significantly larger than the 40mm driver found in the Alesis, and in the world of audio physics, size often correlates with the ability to move more air and reproduce lower frequencies with greater detail. The stated frequency response of 10Hz to 36kHz is impressive. Most consumer headphones top out around 20,000 Hz, but this unit extends well beyond that. For a producer working on a computer, this means you aren't just hearing the bass; you are hearing the sub-bass rumble that sits right below human hearing thresholds, ensuring your low-end mix translates correctly to other systems.
Comfort is a major selling point for this model as well, though it approaches it differently. The description highlights "ultra comfortable earpads" designed to eliminate fatigue during long recording sessions. The weight is listed at 0.53 kg, which is roughly 1.17 pounds. This is heavier than the Alesis, suggesting a more robust construction involving metal and plastic components to support the larger acoustic cavity. The closed-back design offers -28dB isolation, which is excellent for preventing microphone bleed during tracking. If you are recording vocals or instruments in a home studio, this level of isolation ensures your sensitive mics don't pick up the sound leaking from your headphones. The sensitivity rating of 95 dB indicates these headphones are highly efficient and will work well with almost any interface or preamp without needing a dedicated amplifier.
The connectivity here leans heavily into the pro-audio workflow. The cable is a single-sided 99.99% OFC (oxygen-free copper) wire with a Mini 3-pin connector. This is a detachable system, a crucial difference from the Alesis. If you are constantly moving your headphones between interfaces, computers, and mixing desks, swapping cables is a convenience that adds years to the life of the product. The 3-meter (9.84 feet) cable length gives you plenty of reach around a studio desk. However, this versatility comes with a caveat: the heavy weight might be tiring for some users over several hours, and the specific 3-pin connector requires you to buy compatible replacement cables if needed, unlike the universal 3.5mm jack of the Alesis. This headset is built for the person sitting still, refining tracks, and demanding absolute fidelity. It is not designed to withstand the physical rigors of a live drum kit, but for the computer-based producer, it is a powerhouse.
• Best for battery life → Neither has batteries as both are wired, but the Monoprice's longer 3-meter cable offers more freedom of movement around a desk.
• Best for physical durability → Alesis DRP100 wins with its sweat-proof silicone headband and rugged design meant for active performance.
• Best for low-frequency extension → Monoprice Over Ear Closed‑Back takes the lead with its 10Hz starting point versus the Alesis 20Hz limit.
• Best for microphone isolation → Monoprice offers -28dB isolation, making it superior for recording environments where bleed must be minimized.
• Best for ease of connection → Alesis DRP100 uses a standard 3.5mm jack with a 1/4-inch adapter, fitting any computer or portable device instantly.
• Best for cable longevity → Monoprice allows for cable replacement due to its detachable 3-pin connector, whereas the Alesis cable is fixed.
• Best for active movement → Alesis DRP100 is lighter (12.8 oz) and designed to stay put during vigorous motion like drumming.
• Best for critical listening → Monoprice's 50mm drivers and 36kHz upper limit provide a wider, more accurate window into the mix.
I am recommending the Monoprice Over Ear Closed‑Back as the better choice for the general buyer looking for a headset for computer use, particularly for music production, gaming, or critical listening. While the Alesis DRP100 is an incredible niche tool for drummers, its fixed cable and limited frequency response make it less versatile for the broader applications of a home office or studio setup. The Monoprice's detachable cable, superior frequency range, and higher sensitivity ensure it will serve you well whether you are editing video, mixing tracks, or enjoying high-resolution audio files. The slightly heavier build is a fair trade-off for the clarity and durability of the pro-audio features. If you are strictly playing drums, grab the Alesis; for everything else, the Monoprice is the smarter investment.
No, neither of these products are wireless earbuds. Both the Alesis DRP100 and the Monoprice Over Ear Closed‑Back are wired, over-ear headphones. They do not support Bluetooth or wireless connectivity, so they are not suitable if you require a wireless solution for your computer.
Both models offer sound isolation through their closed-back designs. The Alesis focuses on isolation via a tight seal and sweat-proof fit for drumming, while the Monoprice explicitly lists a -28dB isolation rating, which is optimized for professional recording to prevent microphone bleed.
Comfort depends on your preference for weight and padding. The Alesis is lighter at 12.8 ounces and features a unique silicone headband that grips well but may feel different against the skin. The Monoprice weighs 0.53 kg but uses ultra-comfortable earpads designed specifically to reduce fatigue during long mixing or recording sessions.
Yes, with the Monoprice Over Ear Closed‑Back, the cable is detachable via a Mini 3-pin connector, allowing you to replace it if it fails. With the Alesis DRP100, the 6-foot cable is permanently attached, meaning a broken cable would require replacing the entire headphone unit.
