These are the thematic events I have organized in my role as a Program Coordinator at the Center for Global Development

Sankofa: Appreciating the Past in Planning the Future of Early Childhood Education, Care, and Development in AfricaJoin the Center for Global Development for a virtual discussion with the editors of the recently released book, "Sankofa: Appreciating the Past in Planning the Future of Early Childhood Education, Care and Development in Africa." The book “seeks to address long-standing concerns and inequities regarding the missing voices, data and knowledge in this field from Africa. It aims to tell African stories and experiences through their own contextualized understandings of education for their youngest citizens.” The event will include a presentation of the book by the editors as well as a discussion on the implications of the book’s findings for early childhood development, women’s economic empowerment, and care policies in Africa.

Building Economies That Work for Women: Opportunities Through the 2023 G7, G20, and APEC SummitsUnder the current leadership of the G7 (Japan), G20 (India), and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (United States), women’s economic empowerment is a common theme. For the agenda to move forward, rethinking how to foster policies and systems that allow women to work, care, and take full and equal advantage of economic opportunities will be critical.

Women’s Land Rights in Sub-Saharan AfricaThere is overwhelming evidence on the benefits of women’s land ownership for their own economic outcomes, as well as those of their wider communities and countries. Yet governments in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remain reluctant to either establish or proactively enforce laws that accord women equal rights to inherit land.

In the Face of Localization: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)To promote localization, donor agencies such as USAID and their partners are looking to identify and elevate the experiences and expertise of practitioners, researchers, and advocates within low- and middle-income countries. But to what extent are marginalized voices being heard?

Care Data Portals: Introducing Local and Global InitiativesWhile worldwide demand for care is increasing, there is limited data on the extent that care-related services are provided at communal, national, and international levels, as well as context-specific data on the economic and social benefits that investments in the care sector could yield. This event will present new care data portals that provide insights into local and international care landscapes. The first is a city-level project part of the Caring for Equality initiative—a data collaboration to create a Care Indicators System in Buenos Aires City. The second is a global initiative championed by the International Labour Organization.
