After World War 1 was won, the men and women of the armed forces banded together to form the American Legion so that they can continue to serve their country during peacetime.
Of course, the women of those families also wanted to serve. The ALA was founded Nov. 10, 1919, as an affiliate of The American Legion, and historically has been composed of women associated with male service members. Today we are comprised of both male and female associates of those who served.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 114 was established in 1995 as a 501(c)(19) non-profit Veterans’ Organization and has been active in the local community aiding veterans and their families. The Auxiliary plays a supporting role to the American Legion Post 114 in coordinating the annual Memorial Day events on May 30th, as well as the annual Veterans Day Observance on November 11th. We also participate in the American Legion’s proper disposal of American flags annual Flag Ceremony. We help with setting and maintaining flags on veterans’ gravesites at Pine Grove Cemetery in town.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 114 sponsors deserving high school students so they can attend Girls State, supports the Barrington Food Pantry, contributes to educating our children and community by donating books relating to Veterans to the town and Elementary school libraries, sponsors Veterans through participation of the NH Veterans Home Adopt a Veteran for Christmas Program and supports our veterans and their families.
