The purpose of this visualization is to give the world access to the original handwritten works of Leonardo da Vinci which is preserved at the Biblioteca Ambroslana in Milan. It serves to view the information in a very organized way. The collection -Data, consists of 1,119 pages covering different topic and is presented interactively to be sorted in variety of ways.
Above shown are some of the works that you'll find in the visualizations. As we all know Leonardo's expertise as a painter, architect, an engineer, a theatrical producer and was widely popular in Renaissance -era in Italy. Weather you're interested in Geometry and Algebra, physics and Natural sciences, Tools and machines, Architecture and Applied Arts or Human Sciences this visualization shows you all those works by da Vinci himself as he did. It helps you relate the advancements that we made today and how we got here with the scratch work early scientist like Leanardo did.
With all this interesting data one might ponder, how would I ever be able to sort them out and makes sense of this. Let's go over the above layout and understand how it's done.
The data ranges from 1478 - 1518 and thus the bar graph at top right not only shows you the pages per year for particular years but also allows you to move the circles at the corners to narrow down the time.
Now on the top right hand side you can slide the circles to view the pages based on their numerical numbering. The amplitude of the graph shows you the number of topics per page.
The bar char at the right shows you the subjects that the pages contain and their occurrences. So we can see their is a lot more pages related to Geometry then human Sciences. What is really interesting is that these subjects are color coded. So in the middle portion you can see all the pages, themselves being colored to show which page contains which topics.
Below is a screenshot showing how the view changes once you narrow down you selection once you click any of these bars to specifically see pages with that subject.
You can see that just the pages with subject "Tools and Machine" are active and all the others dim out. Interestingly enough a table appears in the bottom right now that shows all the tools mentioned in these pages and their density. You can now further click the tools and narrow down your results. Let's now open up a Page
Clicking the page brings up this view. Top left shows you the page number and the bar next to it allows you to keep moving to the later pages. Left sidebar shows you the info about the page and buttons to see the rear of the page.
Clicking the page brings up this view, In the bottom their is button so that you could rotate the page however you like and with the mouse wheel scroll zoom in and out.
Since the data is images, and although the scan quality of these images is high enough that you can zoom and see what's there, but in some images due to the age of them or the writing utensil, the brightness suffers a little bit. A bit of image tools where we can adjust the brightness and contrast values would be appreciated.
Furthermore, the dark theme and color scheme really separates the data, but a lighter theme can be introduced as well.
