Teaching @ IIT Kanpur

I have been involved in teaching since my first semester at IITK. I have taught several courses at various levels. My approach toward teaching has always been consultative and interactive. For me the joy and satisfaction in teaching comes from interaction with the students.

In 2018-19 (summer), I offered the laboratory course PHY101A, which is a compulsory course for BT/BS students, for a DAP (Visual impairment) student. For the course we modified the existing laboratory experiments to include more tactile and audio information so that the student can perform the experiments with little help from TAs.

The online mode of instructions due to COVID19 pandemic restrictions has created many challenges in offering laboratory courses. In the physics department we have tried to keep the nature of hands-on experimentation of the laboratory course to the extent possible. I was part of the team for two courses (PHY441A - Electronics, and PHY101A - Physics Laboratory), where novel methods were adopted to achieve this goal.

In PHY441A instead of offering remote laboratory, we decided to bring the laboratory at home. With due permission from the institute, the necessary equipment was sent to ~ 47 students at their homes, so that the rigor of the experiment is maintained.

In PHY101A, we employed mobile phone-based app (phyphox), which lets the students take high quality data with their mobile phone sensors. The students were asked to perform some simple experiments using house hold items and analyze the data, so that they may learn and appreciate the procedure of measurement properly.
