Akeeba Backup creates a full backup of your site in a single archive. The archive contains all the files, a database snapshot and an installer similar in function to the standard Joomla! installer. The backup and restore process is AJAX powered to avoid server timeouts, even with huge sites. Alternatively, you can make a backup of only your database, or only your files. Akeeba Backup is the reliable, easy to use, open source backup solution for your Joomla! site.

First, the old site had to be live with MySQL, so that I could upgrade it to joomla 2.5 with jUpgrade. jUpgrade Pro (beta software) would not work, FYI, so I had to use the original jUpgrade. The site upgraded smoothly to joomla 2.5.

With the new site up and running in joomla 2.5 on MySQL, I should be able to use akeeba backup to backup the site, then I restored the backup to a new site that was set up to use SQL Server. I will update this after I've successfully restored the site to SQL Server.

Akeeba is a popular plugin for Joomla web hosting. It automates the process of keeping your files safe without having to manually backup the Joomla website. It has a lot of tools and functionality, which is why many people trust the module.

If you need to review your backups, go to the Akeeba Backup by clicking on the COMPONENTS menu item near the top of the screen. Then click on Akeeba Backup. Here you can manage the backups that have been made with Akeeba. You can also create a backup from this point. You can use Akeeba Kickstart to restore a backup as per the instructions below.

I've been asked to migrate a site over from a previous host and was sent a backup file; it was generated using Akeeba. My question is, how do use this backup to migrate to a fresh installation? Any help would be most appreciated.

Sorry to provide just a link as answer, but the only reasonable way I know of is to use -kickstart-documentation.html. Download link is here. The very short version is that you upload the kickstart.php and the backup to the root of the site and then use browser to go to yourdomain.tld/kickstart.php. This starts the extraction and later installation. But read the documentation first, it is not really difficult, but you do need to understand what the installer asks correctly for it to work.

In this article you are going to discover the key reasons why you need to keep your Joomla website backed up, how to perform Joomla backups, and how to manage the storage of your backups for many years to come.

Companies who take regular backups of their Joomla website have the peace of mind that anything a hacker does to their website can be easily undone by rolling back to a previous version of their website and increasing their Joomla security.

Hopefully at this point you understand the importance of backing up your website and want to get stuck right in. Well the good news is that Joomla has an amazing backup extension available that does everything you need and doesn't cost a penny! And it's called "Akeeba Backup".

Plus having over 1000 reviews on the Joomla Extension Directory is always a good indicator that you're onto a winner! And the fact that the free version gives you everything you need to perform a full Joomla backup gets a few extra bonus points from me.

Akeeba Backup, in many cases, can perform an entire backup of your website in under 2 minutes (which is quite amazing when you take into account the amount of money and time it would cost to rebuild a website in the event of a disaster).

This will then take you to a page where you can give the backup a description, password and comment. For the most part, there is no need to do anything here as the default description will include the date the backup was taken (which is the most important piece of information you could store about this backup).

If your website is undergoing some fairly major changes, you may want to add into the description that this is a backup that was taken prior to said changes. But for this example we're going to go with the default.

Don't procrastinate on backups because it will come back to bite you. In fact, stop reading articles about backups and go back up your website now. But before you do that, why not give this tutorial a share across your social media profiles to show some love?

To start creating a new backup, go to Components > Akeeba Backup. There you will see the component options. You can create a new backup using the default configuration by clicking the default one-click backup button. (Other basic operations are also can be done from here.)

On the next page, the system will gather some more configuration information from you. If you're restoring the site in the same server using an on-site backup, leave all these options as default. Then click the Start Restoration button. The progress will be shown on the screen.

Always keep a recent backup of your site. Accidents happen, but there are many other reasons to have your backup files handy before the need arises. N.B. backups should not be used to restore a hacked site because the hack could have been on the site for some time could have been backed up with the site.

Practice both backup and restore. Nobody should wait for an emergency to test their skills and tools for dealing with an emergency. Very often people create a backup of something that is empty or corrupted and discover that none of their critical data was backed up. Nobody likes a ship that sinks with empty lifeboats. It's also wise to practice getting people out of the lifeboats and into a new working system.

Having a backup is not just about accidents; a person well versed in backup can help with safe development of new features. Backup and restore help web managers create a staging website where new changes can be practiced without risking the production website. The clone can be created on a local machine acting as a test server or any other folder or web hosting account supporting the SQL and PHP versions used by the site you've backed up.

When servers are hosted in the same building as the staff, the web administrators should make extra care to store the backup copies of the database and files in a different building. Fire, theft, water or other damage often wipes out the live website and backups. On a regular basis the web administrators should burn both the database and files to a CD or save to an external hard drive off site. e24fc04721
