Summer School - June 28 to July 9, 2021

The AIU Summer School offers five modules from 3 disciplines: Economics, Computer/Data Science, and the Course of Research Skills. The modules are:

  • Research Skills,

  • Data Science,

  • Computer Science,

  • Macroeconomics and Finance,

  • Economic Policy Analysis in Armenia.


The main objective of the AIU Summer School is to develop the students' skills and broaden their knowledge in different disciplines, develop critical thinking skills, and enhance the students' hard and soft skills.


Students need to choose one of the suggested disciplines + research and soft skills. The modules are detailed below. Students can choose to participate in one or several of the modules. Classes will be held virtually. The teaching language is English, Russian and Armenian.


The courses are taught by instructors, who are graduates of internationally recognized universities and institutions.

Introduction to Research Skills

The goal of this course is to measurably build on students’ academic English and research skills by engaging them in speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary-learning activities. The participants will read reports, research papers, and texts, with an emphasis on discourse features, thematic flow, and citation. Additionally, this course aims to develop skills such as reading new information, identifying research components, paraphrasing, and quoting effectively using their own words and ideas.


Data science

This module will introduce students to what data science is and what data scientists do. The audience will discover the applicability of data science across fields and learn how data analysis can help you make data-driven decisions. In addition to the basic principles of data science, students will grasp concepts like market research, storytelling, uplift modeling, causal inference, and learn about best practices on how to interpret data.


Computer science

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the basics of computer science disciplines. The students will learn the basics of programming, basics of C / C ++ Programming, and the introduction to Web development.


Macroeconomics and Finance

This course will cover a number of topics at the intersection of finance and macroeconomics. We will begin with the essentials of finance, introducing the students to concepts such as the time value of money, net present value calculations; to methods used to value projects and financial securities; and, to the basics of banking theory. We will then move to topics in macroeconomics, where we will introduce the students to the study of financial crises; the basics of monetary economics; and, finally, to how economists think about growth and development in economies such as Armenia.


Economic Policy Analysis in Armenia

This course investigates the role of government in the economy and aims at equipping students with tools sufficient to address a wide range of economic policy issues. The emphasis is on microeconomic analysis of real-life policies in Armenia. We study the instruments by which governments intervene in the marketplace policies, and apply our tools to analyze policy problems in social security, demographics, education, health, among others. Students can additionally expect to learn some of the main methods of modern microeconometrics.
