A foundational principle for a successful life is to "work harder on yourself than you do on your job." True success and happiness are not just about what you do for a living; they are the result of conscious personal development. It's a common belief that our income rarely, if ever, "far exceeds our personal development." Even if someone gets a lucky break and their income jumps, it will often "come back to where they are" unless they grow to match it. This is why if someone "hands you a million dollars, you'd best become a millionaire quickly" so you have the mindset to keep it. Instead of pursuing success, it's more effective to become the kind of person who attracts it. The focus shifts from what you get to who you become, as true happiness is "contained in what you become." This journey of personal change can be broken down into a practical, three-step approach.
The first and most important step is to "find out how things work." Often, the main barrier to success isn't a lack of money, but a "lack of an idea" on how to create wealth and happiness. The problem isn't the empty bank account; it's the lack of a plan. To find these ideas, one must become a dedicated student of success: "If you wish to be successful, study success." This requires a constant study, not leaving things to chance. A key practice is to write down what you learn in a journal, not using your head as a "filing cabinet," and then practicing "repetition, repetition, repetition" to let the idea take root.
There are three primary ways to find these ideas. First is reading, which allows for "self-education" because "standard education will get you standard results." One book "might save you five years" by letting you learn from another's experience. Second is to listen, and not just to the successful. One can learn from unsuccessful people by finding out "what poor people read" and choosing "not to read it." More importantly, one should "take rich people out to dinner" and listen for two hours; the ideas shared could multiply your income. Third is to observe, because "success leaves clues." This means paying attention to everything, even "how a man walks" if he's earning $10,000 a month. It's about developing not just sight (seeing with your eyes) but insight (seeing with your mind), which allows you to see answers.
The second step is to "go to work." This doesn't mean your daily job, but rather taking decisive action on what you have learned. This requires "self-motivation," as you can't wait for "somebody to come by and turn you on"—what if they don't show up? You must have a better plan for your life. A practical way to build this is by starting with "the little disciplines." You can't handle life's big challenges unless you first take on the small ones. By mastering small tasks, one builds the "muscle" and practice needed for bigger things. The goal is to ensure that your "learning leads to action," not just knowledge. As the saying goes, "Don't let your learning lead to knowledge, you'll become a fool. Let your learning lead to action, you can become wealthy."
Finally, the third step is a crucial word of caution: "don't try to beat the system." Looking for shortcuts, "cutting corners," or "slicing it" is a trap. This approach ultimately leads to a "cheap life." Instead, the right path is to find out how the system works best and then to follow it with integrity, without compromise, even if it seems to take a little longer. This commitment to doing things the right way is a core part of building lasting success, which includes many kinds of wealth—money being "one of the least of all values."
In conclusion, this approach is one of personal responsibility and empowerment. It teaches that wealth and happiness are not accidents, but the results of a deliberate choice to grow. The most powerful part of this philosophy is the knowledge that "you don't ever have to be the same again... only by choice." You can change your life's direction at any time. But if you "don't do something starting tomorrow that'll make a difference," then your next five years will look just like your last five. The choice to change is available to anyone, any day they wish.
