How the Process Works

If you have a simple process, it should take about 3-4 months before you ship out to basic training in San Antonio, Texas. Each recruiter may run their process a little bit differently depending on the area that they are assigned. This is how I run the process in the Staunton, VA office.

Step 1: Get Prequalified

I will pre-screen you over the phone to check for any red flags that are disqualifying to enter such as serious medical issues, law violations, drug use, ect. I will send you a practice test you can take at home to give you an idea of how you will score on the ASVAB. If your pre-screen and practice test scores are good to go, then I will schedule your initial appointment.

Documents to bring to your initial appointment. If you don't have original or certified copies of these, now is the time to get them!
- Social Security card
- Drivers License
- HS Diploma
- Birth Certificate

Other documents depending on the individual include: Marriage certificate, Divorce decree, Child's birth certificate, Child's SSC, Spouse's SSC, Medical documents, Police and court records.

Step 2: Initial Appointment

Currently, we will hold a video appointment. I will build you a profile in our system and we will review all necessary paperwork. I will provide you a background check packet that must be completed before your next appoinmtent. We will go over benefits the Air Force has to offer, answer any of your questions, ensure you are ready to join and open to the current needs of the Air Force. Air Force needs currently include all mechanical aptitude jobs, electrical aptitude jobs, security forces, and special warefare positions. While we have 140+ career fields available and book a wide variety of jobs, we cannot guarantee or create positions based on applicant wants.

Step 3: Military Entry Processing Station (MEPS)

Once your background check and profile are completed, I will submit a scheduling request to MEPS for your ASVAB and physical. This is done over a two day process. Day one, you will test and stay at the hotel overnight (food and stay paid for by the Air Force). Day two, you will conduct a physical and swear in to the Delayed Entry Program. We will complete your MEPS breifing prior to this process to ensure you are prepared to go to MEPS.

Testing

ASVAB: This consists of 9 sections and takes about 3 hours to complete. This test measures your strengths and weaknesses in different subjects.

TAPAS: This test is a personality test to ensure that you are mentally qualified for certain demanding career fields.

Special Testing: Certain career paths such as Air Traffic Controller or Linguists require special testing that will be conducted at a later date.

Physical

The physical is similar to a sports physical or annual check up at a normal doctors office; no running or pushups are involved. The physical will be checking qualifying factors such as vision, hearing, blood tests, drug tests, etc.

Swearing In

After you pass your testing and physical, you will swear in to the World's Greatest Air Force! You will also complete the oath of enlistment. This is the official start of the most rewarding career ever!

Step 4: Job Choices

Immediately following your oath of enlistment, you will return to my office in Staunton. We will then go over career paths in depth. Out of all the jobs that you qualify for, I will have you select 8 jobs that you think will fit you best. I will give you 2-3 days to review your decisionand to see if you want to make any changes to it. At this time, I will also explain your new role as an Air Force Delayed Entry Program member.

Step 5: Delayed Entry Program (DEP)

The delayed entry program is everyone who is qualified and waiting to book a job and is waiting for their ship date. I meet up with everyone once a month at my office to go over qualifications, discuss the Air Force, go over any questions that you may have, and conduct physical training sessions to prepare you for Basic Training.

Step 6: Getting Selected for a Job

Once a month, our operations center will receive 100+ contracts. At this point, they will review every DEP member in Virginia that does not have a job and will align contracts based on applicant's request and Air Force needs. Once you book a job, you will receive a date to leave for Basic Training, typically between 2-3 months.
