Air Force Recruiting
Frederick, MD
Frederick, MD
I’m Technical Sergeant Jonathan Neff. I am an active duty enlisted Air Force recruiter in Frederick, MD. I have been in the Air Force 10 years and have been stationed in California (Travis AFB), Germany (Spangdahlem AB) and now here in Frederick, MD. I’m married to an amazing Air Force veteran and I have two kids named Peyton and Blake. I'm originally from Leitchfield, Kentucky and after I graduated high school I worked in a factory and dreamed of doing something MORE. I wanted a better way to pay for school, to travel, to become independent and to create real opportunities for myself. More than anything I wanted to do something meaningful with my life.
I joined the Air Force on 7 Dec 2010, after working in a factory for roughly a year. I crushed the ASVAB but didnt have many job opportunities because I'm colorblind. I had to wait for a job to become available but finally after months of excitement my Recruiter called me up one day and gave me the good news. I entered the Air Force with the promise of becoming an Air Transportation specialist.
I spent 8.5 weeks at BMT located within Lackland AFB, TX. I then went on to Fort Lee, VA where I spent 6 weeks learning my specialty at Tech School. Afterwards I went to my first duty and I have to say, it was everything I hoped it would be. It was there I met my wife, who was also in the Air Force doing the same job. We married, moved to Germany, started a family, and it's been happily ever after since.
Now I have the pleasure of helping you create your own story. Next I'll cover what needs to take place in order to make that happen.

You can reach me in a lot of different ways. Preferred method is texting. My government cell phone is 240-691-8287 and you can also email me at jonathan.neff.1@us.af.mil.
Once we've made contact we'll go through a screening questionnaire to ensure you're eligible to join. Big things I will be asking for is significant medical history, height/weight, tattoos, law violations, and citizenship status.

The ASVAB is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test. This is the entrace exam for all military branches and components. The link below has a decent way of breaking it down, although some of the data is out-of-date. You'll need a minimum overall score of 31 to enter, but it's the line scores (MAGE) that determine what jobs you qualify for.
MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) is the big show. This is where the magic happens, where you actually join. At MEPS you'll complete all official testing such as the ASVAB and personality test. You'll also go through a complete medical physical, job counseling, and initiate your background investigation. Once all actions are complete you'll swear in to the DEP (Delayed Entry Program). This swear in ceremony is very iconic, so I always encourage family to attend.
See 'MEPS Briefing' button for more info.
Once you've sworn in to the DEP we cover your responsibilites. This includes attending monthly DEP meetings (DEP Calls), where we discuss key information on what to expect and go through exercises to prepare you for BMT (Basic Military Training).
Be sure to download the Aim High app to help you prepare.
Once at MEPS, you'll build a preference list of jobs, or what we call AFSCs (Air Force Specialty Code). This list will be based off what you ultimately qualifiy for and are interested in. Each month we get a set of jobs and at that point jobs are assigned to members of the DEP. The chance in which you'll be selected is determined by what's available, and what you've listed. If you're listing the jobs the Air Force is hiring for then you can expect to be selected much quicker than if you only listed jobs the Air Force rarely hires for. Once selected, you'll recieve a job contract for review and that contract will also have your ship out date.
We'll do departure briefings as we get closer to your actual departure date. We cover what to bring, the do's and do not's of BMT, and brief family members on graduation. We ship out to BMT every Tuesday and hold BMT graduation every Friday.
Reach out today! There's no benefit in waiting. I constantly hear, "I want to wait till summer is over". The process takes on average 3-6 months. If you have a complicated case it could take even longer. At the end of the day you set your availibility date so you get to tell the Air Force when you're ready to go. With that being said, shoot me a text at 240-691-8287 so we can set you on the path to greatness.
As always, Aim High!
