The Sirih Astray, summarised.
This story is about two leafy Sirih brothers that were unexpectedly met with a tragedy of separation while they were going about their daily lives. The little brother as the orange-coloured Sirih , Betle, was then saved by his older brother Piper after being kidnapped by an evil Caterpillar villain when he fell down the cliff trying to catch up to a piece of cloth that got blown away.
This is my main role during the production of a short animation as my final year project, a background artist. I enjoy rendering the colours and the trees to make it look a little mix of realistic and cartoon-ish style. I attempted to shift the colour in a gradient from green to yellowish to orange to set the mood as the story progresses.
In the original storyline, I wanted to gradually shift the colours darker to emphasize how lonely Betle felt after being lost and feeling helpless for years, and also to send a message on how hopeless Piper felt in his non-stop search for Betle.
I was also in charge of colouring and rendering the poster for my final year project. I chose a dark colour for the background to signify how scary and intense the experience will be in the story for the characters. I focused the lights around the two main characters to symbolise hope amidst the challenge they were going to face.
Some of my minor involvements in animations during this project is to do inbetweens for a few scenes.
One of the scene involves this character named Piper walking out of the house and hopping down the stairs with a basket of
In this scene, I was given keyposes and helped to make inbetweens where Piper is hanging the laundry onto the clothesline. I had to reanimate the cloth to make it flow smoothly.
In this scene, Piper and his little brother Betle were drying the clothes together.
Fun facts about this project:
1) The two brothers were initially humans when I first came up with the original concept to the story.
2)Betle was supposed to be deaf.
3) The original storyline was much more depressing since I wanted to go for a sad ending, but was later changed due to circumstances.
4)The real battle in the storyline was supposed to include war between the Sirih species and the caterpillars.
5) the name Piper and Betle came from the scientific name of Sirih.
