The purpose of this lab was to create a map visualizing the difference in global temperature between the following two time periods: 1881 to 1891 and 2009 and 2019. Red pixels indicate that temperature increased over time , light grey indicates no change, and blue indicates temperature decreased over time. Missing data are symbolized as darker grey.
Temperature data were obtained from the NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies (www.giss.nasa.gov) as a netCDF file, were imported into ArcMap 10.7.1 as a raster file, and were then color scaled for ease of understanding. The map was projected using the Robinson projection, and exported as image files (PDF and PNG).
This map could be improved with a color gradient containing more breaks, to better convey the differences in temperature increases or decreases, and may also benefit from smaller raster pixels (higher temperature resolution) if those data are available.
