My research focuses on engineering biocatalysts, including enzymes and synthetic microbial communities (SynComs), for sustainable bioconversion. Specifically, my research encompasses (i) integrating spatial metagenomics and culturomics to discover previously uncharacterized microbes and design SynComs informed by spatial organization in natural environments, microbial metabolic capabilities, and experimentally validated interactions; and (ii) discovering and engineering enzymes to overcome metabolic bottlenecks through AI-guided sequence-function learning and experimental validation. Together, these complementary approaches aim to improve the efficiency and robustness of biocatalytic systems for converting biomass, CO2, and other renewable feedstocks into value-added products.
