Children's book illustrations play a crucial role in capturing young readers' imaginations and enhancing storytelling. Each style has its unique charm and can be chosen based on the book's theme, target age group, and overall aesthetic. The right illustration style can make a story more engaging and memorable for young readers.
Here are some popular illustration styles used in children's literature. The illustrations were created using DALL.E (in ChatGPT).
The images of different styles above were created using DALL.E/ChatGPT with this prompt:
Kai Tan is a slim, athletic 10-year-old with straight, jet-black hair cut neatly above his ears. He has dark brown eyes. His skin is warm and tan. Kai wears a green shirt, short brown pants, red shoes and white socks. Kai Tan is chasing butterflies in a meadow during the golden hour. [Specify the style]Specify aspect ratios such as 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 3:2, etc.].
Now, use this prompt with other generative AI tools such as Ideogram , Leonardo , Canva (Magic Media) and PicLumen . Compare the output for the same style.
Creating vivid and engaging characters is crucial for storytelling, especially in children's books. With AI tools, illustrators and writers can now bring their characters to life more easily. This section explores how to describe characters in detail, guiding AI tools to generate illustrations that match the creator's vision. By providing clear, specific descriptions—including physical traits, attire, expressions, and poses—these tools can produce illustrations that capture each character's essence, adding depth and personality to the story.
When describing the description of the character in the prompt and to make your prompt more precise, you can focus on the following aspects:
Specify Unique Features: Include distinctive physical traits, attire (outfit), or accessories that make each character visually unique.
Clarify Expressions and Poses: Describe the exact facial expressions, poses, or actions you want each character to exhibit.
Context and Environment: Provide details about the setting or environment where the characters are located to guide the overall composition.
Avoid Ambiguity: Use clear and specific language to avoid any potential confusion in the interpretation.
Reference Other Elements: If the characters are interacting with each other, describe how they are positioned relative to each other or to other objects.
Define the Style: Mention the desired artistic style, such as "storybook illustration," "cartoonish," or "realistic."
Specify Colour Schemes: Indicate any specific colour palettes or tones you want to be used.
Aspect Ratio and Layout: Include details about the overall layout, aspect ratio, and how the characters should be arranged in the scene.
Create a storybook-style illustration of Aqil, an 8-year-old boy with bright brown eyes, a round face with rosy cheeks, and straight black hair cut neatly above his ears. Aqil smiles playfully, wearing a striped red-and-yellow t-shirt, blue denim shorts, and red sneakers. He is standing in an energetic pose, holding a small toy aeroplane in one hand and waving with the other. The background should feature a sunny park with green grass and trees, creating a warm, cheerful atmosphere. The colours should be vibrant, focusing on warm tones like yellows and greens. The illustration should have a slightly exaggerated, cartoonish look typical of children's book illustrations. Aspect ratio: 16:9.
A children's storybook illustration of Maya, a 7-year-old Malay girl with curly dark brown hair and olive-toned skin, wearing a light pink floral dress and white sandals. She is sitting under a tree by a sparkling lake, holding a small book in her lap. The background features calm water, ducks, and lush greenery, with soft sunlight filtering through the leaves. The scene is peaceful and serene, with gentle textures, a soft, hand-drawn style, soft pastel palette, subtle shading, child-friendly aesthetics, whimsical atmosphere, slight brushstrokes, and watercolour wash. This exercise will help you practice translating written character descriptions into visual prompts, and understand how AI image generators interpret textual information. Write the prompt to include all the details.
Here are the instructions for the exercise:
Imagine one human character for your storybook. Give a name for the character.
Write a detailed prompt for an AI image generator, describing the character's appearance. Include information about their gender, age, facial features, body type, and attire.
Use the AI image generator with your prompt to create an image of the character.
Review the generated image and compare it to the original character description. Note any similarities or differences.
If needed, refine your prompt and generate a new image to better match the character description.
In the context of images for children's storybooks, a 'consistent character image' refers to maintaining visual continuity and recognisability of a character across multiple illustrations throughout the book. This involves:
Keeping the character's physical attributes (such as facial features, body shape, and proportions) consistent from one image to another
Ensuring the character's clothing, accessories, and other distinguishing features remain consistent unless intentionally changed as part of the story
Maintaining a consistent art style for the character across all illustrations
Preserving the character's personality and expressions in a recogniSable way throughout the book
Consistency in character imagery is crucial for young readers as it helps them easily identify and connect with the characters throughout the story, enhancing their understanding and engagement with the narrative.
However, achieving perfect consistency in character imagery can be challenging, especially when using AI-generated illustrations. Some techniques to improve consistency include using detailed character descriptions in prompts, maintaining a consistent art style, and utilizing features of AI tools that allow for character presets or variations.
It's worth noting that even with these techniques, some manual adjustments or touch-ups may still be necessary to achieve optimal character consistency across all illustrations in a children's storybook.
Generating consistent image characters using AI remains a challenging aspect of creating children's storybooks. However, there are several tips and tools available to help improve character consistency across multiple images. While these techniques can significantly improve character consistency, it's important to note that perfect consistency may still require some manual adjustments or touch-ups in post-processing.
Use detailed character descriptions: Provide comprehensive descriptions of your characters, including physical attributes, clothing, and unique features, in your prompts.
Maintain style consistency: Specify the same art style (e.g., "cartoon style" or "watercolour illustration") for all character images.
Leverage AI tool features:
Midjourney: Use the "/describe" command to analyse existing images and generate detailed prompts for similar characters.
Leonardo: Employ the "Characters" tab to create and save character presets for reuse.
Ideogram: Take advantage of the "Variations" feature to generate multiple versions of a character while maintaining core attributes.
Use image-to-image generation: Start with a base character image and use it as a reference for generating variations or different poses.
Create a character style guide: Develop a visual reference sheet for each character to maintain consistency across different scenes or stories.
Using DALL-E and other generative AI tools to create images for children's books has become increasingly popular and accessible. Here's how you can use these tools effectively:
DALL-E (in ChatGPT Plus): This tool allows you to generate images based on simple text prompts. You can describe the scene or character you want, and DALL-E will create it. It's particularly useful for quickly visualizing ideas.
Midjourney: Known for producing high-quality images, Midjourney is excellent for creating detailed, artistic illustrations. It's particularly good at maintaining consistency in character designs across multiple images.
Leonardo.AI: This tool offers both free and paid options and is capable of creating stunning, imaginative images. It's a good choice for generating unique and creative illustrations.

Specify the same art style (e.g., "cartoon style" or "watercolour illustration") for all images to maintain a cohesive look.
Use features like variations or image-to-image generation to create different poses or scenes with the same character.
Develop a visual reference sheet for each character to maintain consistency.
Remember, while these AI tools are powerful, you may still need to do some manual adjustments or touch-ups to achieve perfect consistency in your illustrations.
Among the free AI tools for image generation I've tested, Leonardo.AI stands out for producing the most consistent character designs. As of August 29, 2024, Leonardo. AI offers premium features for generating consistent characters, including Consistent Characters and Training & Dataset. These advanced tools are exclusive to paid subscribers. However, free plan users can still achieve character consistency by utilising the seed number feature.
The picture above shows the interface and the settings to generate the image.
To start, I describe the boy's physical appearance, whom I named Kai Tan. It's crucial to assign a name to each character in your story. The settings are shown in the picture.
PicLumen will generate four versions of the character (free plan users cannot choose less than four). Download the images.
Before you generate the next image, copy the seed number. Enter the seed number in the box beneath the 'Use Fixed Seed'. Keep the original prompt intact but add the desired action. This step is known as Remix.
Look at the following examples.
Prompt: Kai Tan is a slim, athletic 10-year-old boy with straight, jet-black hair cut neatly above his ears. He has dark brown eyes. His skin is warm and tan. He wears a green shirt, short brown pants and red shoes. 3D Pixar animation style.

What is a Character Sheet?
A character sheet displays multiple images of the same character with various facial expressions, poses, and actions. Most AI-powered image generation tools can create such sheets. The images are typically arranged in a grid against a blank—usually white—background. Each image can be individually cropped or cut out and placed into a separately generated scene.
The advantage of the character sheet is that image consistency is usually better than when the character is created together with the intended scene. However, it is also quite limited because sometimes it's difficult to blend the image seamlessly into the scene or when we want the character to perform a specific action.
Take a look at the two images below. The fly and the frog characters are not consistent; in fact, they look like totally different characters.
Let's create the character sheet for the fly and the frog.
First, erase the original images (using a Magic eraser in Canva Magic Studio) of the fly and frog from the scene. Then, choose the appropriate images from the character sheet, crop them, and substitute them in the scene. Here's the result (shown for one scene only):
As you can see, this technique is more tedious and laborious.
Example 1: Little boy, wearing glasses, multiple expressions, in full body, Pixar style, white background
Example 2: Little Asian boy character, multiple poses and expressions, children's book illustration style, detailed, watercolour, cute, 8-year-old boy, full colour, blue Wellington boots, green coat with hood, short wavy brown hair, flat colour, white plain background.
Generating images using DALL-E in ChatGPT remains challenging and frustrating. It requires considerable patience. However, while the generative AI tools for image creation are still evolving, this option is still worth considering.
First, in ChatGPT, use this prompt to generate the character sheet (change the details as necessary):
A six-panel photo collage of Kai Tan, a slim, athletic 10-year-old boy with straight, jet-black hair cut neatly above his ears, dark brown eyes, warm tan skin, wearing a green shirt, brown pants, and red shoes, standing in front of a plain solid background with studio lighting. Candid photography, highlighting the beauty of imperfections. The person is moving, turning, and getting slightly happier in each frame. Closeup photos. Painting, artistic, bokeh with beautiful ambience, evenly-spaced photo grid with deep colour tone, aspect ratio 16:9
Here's the result:
Next, ask ChatGPT to provide the 'seed number' for the generated image. A seed number is a unique identifier that helps ChatGPT generate consistent characters. You'll find it works in about 6 out of 10 generations—that's when you'll need all the patience in the world! The following examples showcase some of the acceptable generations.
Click through the samples:
The following examples show two common issues: (1) ChatGPT generates images in different styles and (2) the image character changes completely.
Key Takeaways
Generating consistent images using ChatGPT or other generative AI applications can be quite challenging, as demonstrated in this interaction. Here are a few key observations:
Maintaining character consistency: Despite using the same seed number, the appearance of Kai Tan varied significantly across images.
Style shifts: The image style changed unexpectedly from 3D Pixar-like animation to illustration.
Age inconsistency: In some images, Kai appeared older than the specified 10 years.
Complete mismatches: Occasionally, the generated image was entirely different from the original description.
These challenges highlight the current limitations of AI image generation in maintaining consistency across multiple prompts, even when using the same seed number. It often requires multiple attempts and careful prompting to achieve the desired results. Be patience :)
Microsoft Bing Image Creator is a powerful AI tool that allows users to generate images based on text prompts. It utilizes advanced AI technology, specifically the DALL-E model, to create visuals that can be used for various purposes, from artistic projects to marketing materials.
Initial Allocation and Usage
Upon signing up for Bing Image Creator, users receive 100 boost points per day. These boosts are special tokens that allow for faster image generation. Each boost used significantly reduces the processing time for image creation, making it quicker to see results. Without boosts, the image generation process can take considerably longer, potentially up to five minutes for a set of images, compared to an average of 10-20 seconds with boosts active.
Deduction of Points
Each time you generate an image using Bing Image Creator, one boost point is deducted. This means that if you have 100 boosts, you can create 100 images quickly before running out.
When your boost points are exhausted, the image generation process reverts to its standard speed. Users will be notified that they can redeem Microsoft Rewards points for additional boosts. This means that while you can continue to generate images, the speed and efficiency will be significantly reduced until you acquire more boosts.
There are several ways to earn additional boost points in Bing Image Creator:
Microsoft Rewards Program: Users can earn Microsoft Rewards points by engaging with Bing services, such as searching the web, completing quizzes, or participating in promotions. These points can then be redeemed for more boosts.
Daily Tasks: Completing daily rotating tasks available on the Microsoft Rewards dashboard can also help accumulate points. These tasks often include specific searches or quizzes.
Engagement with Content: Reading top stories or engaging with featured content on Microsoft platforms can yield bonus points.
Direct Requests: You can also request AI-generated images via Bing Chat or by visiting the Bing Image Creator page directly. Each successful generation consumes one boost.
Here's the video tutorial (15.41 min) showing the process of creating consistent images with Leonardo.AI using the remix method.
Prompt ChatGPT to regenerate the image, reminding it to use the same seed number and maintain the original style.
Ask ChatGPT, "Can you recall the seed number?" After it responds, request it to repeat the image generation.
Inform ChatGPT that the image is inconsistent and ask it to make corrections.
When working with AI-generated images, it's common to encounter minor imperfections that don't match the intended prompt. These minor defects can often be easily addressed using image editing software like Canva or Photoshop. For instance, you might need to adjust colours, refine details, or remove unwanted elements.
However, it's important to distinguish between minor and major defects. Minor issues, such as slight colour discrepancies or small misalignments, are typically manageable with basic editing tools. Major defects, on the other hand, may include significant compositional errors, incorrect object placement, or fundamental misinterpretations of the prompt.
In cases of major defects, regenerating the image using a refined prompt is generally more efficient and effective than attempting extensive edits. This approach ensures that the core concept of the image aligns closely with your vision, saving time and maintaining the integrity of the AI-generated artwork.
Remember, the goal is to achieve the desired result while balancing effort and quality. Sometimes, a combination of regeneration and minor touch-ups can yield the best outcomes for your AI-assisted creative projects.
Notice the extra red shoe? This can easily be removed in Canva.
The boy is holding two tennis rackets! This is still fixable in Canva but perhaps it's better to regenerate a new image.
Oops! The action was supposed to be 'Kai Tan is holding an old lady's hand and helping her cross the road.' In this case, it's better to regenerate the image.

Objective:
You will apply your skills in using AI tools to create a photobook featuring a consistent character across different scenes. This project will focus on generating consistent character images and compiling them into a photobook format with brief annotations. (see example above).
Project Overview:
You will create a 10-page photobook centred around a single character, illustrating various moments in the character's life or different activities. The project will require you to generate consistent images using AI tools and compile these images into a photobook with brief descriptions or annotations accompanying each image.
Instructions:
Character Creation:
Define the Character: Start by creating a detailed description of the character you will focus on. Include physical traits, outfit, personality, and any unique characteristics. This description will serve as the basis for all the images you generate.
Character Story: Develop a simple narrative or theme for your photobook (e.g., "A Day in the Life," "Adventures of [Character Name]"). This narrative will guide the scenes you create and the annotations you write.
Image Generation:
Select an AI Tool: Choose an AI image generation tool such as DALL-E, Leonardo.AI, or PicLumen.
Generate Consistent Images:
Use your character description to create the first image. This will be the introduction to your character.
