In 2022 I conducted a series of interviews on how Covid-19 and the lockdown affected 4 different college students. Through these interviews I learned about the many different experiences they had during the lockdown, and how some had more positive moments while others had more negative. I also reflect on lockdown and Covid-19 a bit myself and explain what the experience was like to me.
This honors experience involved me taking a very involved English class where I wrote 3 essays over the course of one semester. Each essay dealt with a different topic in writing, and by the end I felt that I had become a more accomplished writer. The first essay taught me about the concept of literacy and how the lessons we learn from one aspect of our life can help us excel in other aspects. The second essay dealt with how the genre of writing effects various features of how the information is presented and how it effects the reader. The third essay explored the concept of discourse communities, and had us conduct interviews with members of a discourse community to glean key information on how these communities interact within themselves and with others. Overall, I feel like this was a great experience, because as someone who is in a STEM major and not necessarily going to be taking a lot of English classes, I learned a lot of valuable information about writing that I would not have normally, and was able to further work on improving my writing skills. I decided to showcase the third essay from this experience, as I feel like it was the one that stretched my limits the most. This was the first essay in a very long time that I had to conduct primary interviews for, and it was also the most involved essay of the semester. I feel like I learned a lot from this essay, and I think it is a good reflection of my understanding of the concepts taught throughout the semester.
My dad (left) and me (right) after finishing the marathon.
In this self designed experience, I decided that I wanted to train for and complete in the Flying Pig Marathon. The experience began in the Fall when I started running weekly to get in shape and prepare for the training schedule starting at the dawn of 2024. During this training schedule I ran well over 20 miles per week and reached distances I had never gotten close to before. I woke up early on Saturday mornings to run and juggled my co-op schedule with the runs during the week. During this experience I also became more familiar with the importance of taking care of your body and using rest days to recover. I developed an injury about halfway through the schedule and had to judge whether if I had recovered enough to being running again or wait longer. In the end I ran about 760.48 miles during the entire training period. My main goal was to finish the marathon, with a stretch goal of sub 5 hours. Unfortunately I wasn't able to hit the stretch goal, but I did successfully complete the full 26.2 miles. The most important thing I learned from this experience was that if I set myself reasonable goals and give myself ample time to achieve them, I can reach new heights I didn't know were possible.
