Varsity Track & Field
Description:
Participate in daily practices, help with equipment, teach underclassmen, as well as compete in meets
Why this experience was special:
Participating in Track meant a lot to myself, not just in the fun experiences I had and the friends I made, but also in the development of my personal character. Track & Field teaches benefits of hard work, support, and a disciplined mind. The Hewlett Boys Track Coach always stated that its one of few sports where you get out of it directly what you put into it. Showing up to practice everyday even when you didn't want to, and pushing yourself to be a teammate who lifts the team up during a terrible workout or after a terrible defeat created core values in me that I will never forget.
Telecommunications/Film Production Club
Description:
Actively create and produce video content for school PSA's and competitions, organize equipment and budget, and teach members how to use equipment/production software.
Why this experience was special:
I've been interested in film and media production my entire life, and have spent years learning how to produce the content I want to make at a quality level through studying the craft and learning how to use editing software. I joined the club thinking I would have the freedom to make what I wanted to make, but quickly learned of the reality of compromise on a film set, and learned to enjoy that aspect of it. Not everyone wants to use the same ideas, film the same way, or even knows how to do what you need them to. Becoming a "team player" was necessary to succeed and have fun in the club, and its a valuable lesson I will take with me into my professional career.
Description:
Learn about business terminology and practices to compete in competitions centered around problems related to marketing, management, public relations and finance.
Why this experience was special:
Participating in DECA showed me the competitive nature of business, and the level of confidence and speaking ability one must have succeed along with great ideas. My first competition proved difficult as my partner flaked on me, which left me very nervous and fumbling with my words. Execution is just as important as the idea itself, and I took this lesson to heart in my future endeavors, such as my experience with Virtual Enterprise.
