Combining Reasoning and Generative AI in Real-World Applications
Abstract
High quality knowledge still plays an important role in many real-world applications and can help to mitigate issues that are often associated with generative AI including hallucinations, lack of transparency and lack of specialised and/or proprietory knowledge. On the other hand, generative AI and agentic workflows can greatly reduce the cost of creating and maintaining such knowledge. Drawing on my experience with Oxford Semantic Technologies (now part of Samsung), I will illustrate how a combination of generative AI, curated knowledge and high-performance reasoning can provide robust and scalable solutions in a wide variety of real-world applications.
Short Bio
Ian Horrocks is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the Royal Society. His research on knowledge representation, ontologies, and automated reasoning has been foundational to the Semantic Web — he played a central role in the design of the OWL ontology language and in the development of widely used reasoning systems such as HermiT and RDFox. He is a co-founder of Oxford Semantic Technologies (now part of Samsung), the company behind the RDFox knowledge graph and reasoning engine, and on the advisory board (ex - Editor-in-Chief) of the journal Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge.
