Curriculum Development and Innovations in TEL/EdTech Teaching (CUPTEL25)
A CUPTEL workshop at the Twentieth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning ECTEL 2025
The rapid rise of Generative AI (GenAI) since 2022 has created urgent demands for educational programmes to address both its technical and ethical dimensions. This workshop will explore how TEL programmes are currently addressing these new demands, going beyond just on AI literacies, but also focusing on the technical, ethical, and pedagogical integration of AI into TEL/EdTech curricula.
This workshop builds on the SIG CUPTEL 'Teaching TEL' workshop at ECTEL 2023, which examined the similarities and differences between TEL programmes across Europe, UK, and beyond. The 2023 workshop also included a discussion on student profiles, exchange structures, and potential future research projects. While AI was also discussed, the rapid advancements in AI in the past two years necessitates a dedicated workshop to focus solely on the teaching of AI in TEL/ EdTech programmes.
The main goals for the workshop are to collaboratively:
Identify the AI/GenAI skills and competencies that are taught--and need to be taught--to prepare the next generation of digital learning professionals.
To identify pedagogical methods, challenges, and strategies for teaching the necessary skills.
In your (max) two-page position paper, please address the following indicative points. You are welcome to focus on just a few of these or on other aspects you consider relevant:
A brief description of your programme (purpose, structure, target learners, modes of delivery, etc.)
For your programme, which AI/Gen AI topics are currently taught (e.g. history, benefits, issues/ethics, prompt/context engineering, other?)
For your programme, if you teach GenAI topics, how do you teach the topic (e.g. lecture, workshop, individual experimentation, other?) Please outline all the methods that are employed on your programme to teach those topics.
In which assignments, if any, do you require/ encourage the use of GenAI and if so, why?
In which assignments, if any, do you prohibit the use of GenAI and if so, why?
Please list the challenges, if any, you encounter in relation to GenAI use/misuse (e.g. plagiarism, inappropriate use, inequitable access, other?) How do you deal with these issues? If you struggle to deal with them, what support do you need?
How do you personally use GenAI (e.g. for writing objectives, curriculum development, lesson planning, writing assignment briefs, research, other?)
Do you think any GenAI topics are missing from your programme that you would like to incorporate? If so, what are they and what is preventing you from teaching them (e.g. lack of expertise, lack of resources (people/time), lack of room in the curriculum/schedule, other?)
Are you familiar with/ do you use any AI Competency Frameworks and if so, how?
Are there any online resources that support you in your teaching of AI/GenAI?
