On March 1, 2019, HKSTP launched the “AI+U: Explore and Experience Exhibition” as a first-ever showcase of ready-for-deployment AI technologies and applications. Around 70 local and overseas companies and institutes specialising in AI research and implementation exhibited solutions that could help transform six key industries, namely Smart Manufacturing, Logistics, Retail and E-commerce, Finance, Platform and Next Gen. They reflected the tremendous potential of the city’s AI capabilities.

The participating AI companies connected and shared knowledge with nearly 1,000 attendees from large corporations, businesses and industry bodies. Attendees were impressed by commercialised solutions such as factory production line management systems, workforce planning systems, financial data analytics, AI-powered alarm systems and healthcare solutions.

Two AI activities at the event displayed the power of AI solutions in a fun and interactive way. The Chatbot Millionaire Challenge demonstrated chatbots’ ability to deliver quick and accurate replies to challenging questions. Kerry Logistics Ltd held a session to share details of its hackathon in February 2019, in which participants developed autonomous drones to support smart warehouse operations.

The Chatbot Millionaire Challenge demonstrated chatbots’ ability to deliver quick and accurate replies to challenging questions.

At AI+U Explore and Experience, six park companies took part in the Chatbot Millionaire Challenge. They had to train their AI bots with machine learning of a dataset within a short period of time so that they could participate in a competition similar to the popular quiz show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. The AI chatbot that could provide the most accurate and quickest replies to a set of challenging questions was the winner. The winning chatbot, developed by EMOS Technologies, received a prize of HK$30,000 sponsored by Kerry Logistics Ltd.

The competition also served to showcase the Science Park partner companies that are delivering results in advancing and commercialising AI and Robotics technology.

Hackathon - Sharing session

Kerry Logistics Ltd held a session to share details of its hackathon in February 2019, in which participants developed autonomous drones to support smart warehouse operations.

Kerry Logistics, Microsoft and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) spent more than three months preparing for this challenge. HKUST was actually the main driving force behind the event by providing drone training. Professional mentors and industry-leading technology partners were on hand to guide contestants on how to manoeuver and programme autonomous drones, using machine learning applications, computer vision and deep learning to extract information from the videos that the drones captured.

The Hackathon’s organisers, mentors and winners gathered at “AI+U Explore & Experience”, held at Science Park on March 1, 2019 to share their experience and insights.
