This study gathered the views of researchers who use qualitative methods through a survey (n=92) and interviews (n=19). The survey suggests that researchers who solely use qualitative methods are less open to the idea of LLMs being used for data analysis compared to those who use both quantitative and qualitative methods. Levels of openness were expressed relatively evenly across the sample population, suggesting that while views are not necessarily polarised, stronger views should not be dismissed as extreme or rare. Analysis of interview data explains why some researchers are more open than others to using LLMs. Explanations were categorised into four themes: capabilities and quality; efficiency and human-technology relationships; ethics and data security; epistemology. As such, ongoing debates about if and how LLMs ought to be used during qualitative data analysis would benefit from being aware of the opportunities and concerns raised across each of these four domains.
