The recent tsunami event in Indonesia and others before it, gives us cause to do much more for our fellow human beings in our own Asia-Pacific region. To this end, we the people of Australia, ask our representatives in Parliament to fund and build a fleet of three 'state of the art' hospital ships, beginning with the flagship AHS Weary Dunlop.
A courageous leader and compassionate surgeon, Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop (1907-1993) once said "in suffering we are all equal". In the time of greatest need, a hospital ship can make an enduring positive difference for all involved.
We have the capacity and the technology to build this fleet. It will create jobs in Australia, it will give people who serve on these ships a priceless experience, and most of all it will help save lives.
Let us begin building the flagship: AHS Weary Dunlop. NOW!
NB: All proposed AHS are secular ambassadors of the Australian People.
Biography: Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop
Sir (Ernest) Edward "Weary" Dunlop
A pharmacist, a medical doctor and a surgeon, Dunlop served in the Australian Army during the second World War as a Lt Colonel.
In 1942 when Java fell to the Japanese, Dunlop became a prisoner of war along with other Australian soldiers and later worked on the Burma-Thailand railway. He remained there until the war ended, working tirelessly to save wounded, sick and malnourished men, often putting his own life at risk as he stood up to the brutality of his captors. Dunlop soon become a legend among Australian prisoners of war and an inspiration for their own survival.
Dunlop received numerous honours and awards in recognition of his civic, sporting, educational, military and medical achievements: Order of the British Empire (1947), Knight Batchelor (1969), Companion of the Order of Australia (1987), Knight Grand Cross, Order of St John of Jerusalem (1992), Knight Grand Cross (1st Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Royal Crown of Thailand (1993). He was an Honorary Fellow of the Imperial College of London, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Honorary Life Member of the RSL and Life Governor of the Royal Women's Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. In 1977 he was named Australian of the Year and in 1988 one of the 200 Great Australians.
Let's commemorate a great war hero on ANZAC day!
Lest we forget.

If only we had a fleet of Hospital ships in this Covid-19 Pandemic.
In a global pandemic situation, Hospital ships would be able to reduce the work load on health care workers in regular hospitals. Hospital ships can also be fitted out to provide the specialist care needed for the problem at hand. The global economic shut down created to 'flatten the curve' may not be necessary in the future if a fleet of hospital ships were ready and able to respond at a moments notice.
In the aftermath of this pandemic, several cruise liners may now have to be rebirthed. Why not purchase them now when the price is low and give them a new life as a fleet of prestigious Australian Hospital Ships!

The Hunter has a great tradition of ship building. This fleet of hospital ships could be built in Newcastle (or bought as cruise ships and retrofitted for purpose in Newcastle). Newcastle could be the fleet's homebase. It is a great location to reach out to our neighbours in the Asia-Pacific region.
