Writing begins when the instructor guides students through forming letters to compose ideas in words, sentences, and composition. Prose is a developmental process that is methodically taught through the writer's personal experiences, and the teacher teaching the writing system. AHS English Department considers writing communication to be integral to all English Language Arts learning as well as the end goal of all instruction.
AHS ELA instructors choose ELA best practices to determine a strategy of follow-up and feedback to assist the growth and development of AHS student writers. The relationship of the teacher to the student in the writing process is the same as a mentor who advises and counsels his or her trainee to focus their attempts to complete a project or work for a desired goal.
AHS ELA department subscribes to formative and summative assessments that monitor student progress for writing through all middle and. high school grade levels. These assessments include pertainent rubrics, pre and post writing assessments, reading responses, thematic and literary analysis essays along with discussions and debate that links oral speech to written evaluation.
Calligraphy is an extension that links to writing composition when it becomes a creative art. Whether it be penmanship, the foundation of writing-- nonfiction, fiction, or story telling; writing is an expression of the self and society that communicates character to the world.
