A New Technique for Production and Construction of Steel Piles with Gates
Abstract:
The pile base area plays an important role in increasing its bearing capacity. Several studies have been carried out to produce types of piles which are enlarged at their bases like under-reamed concrete piles, Franki piles and others. Under-reamed piles are widely used to increase the bearing capacity of piles, they include enlarged bases at different distances along the pile shaft. The production of steel piles with enlarged bases is not widely used in the field of piling. Therefore, it was thought in this study to design a mechanism on enlarged base for the pile or widening at a selected depth so that it does not intersect with pile driving process or its penetration to soil layers.
The manufacture pile is open-ended from both sides and provided with two gates. It consists of a pipe of square cross-section or pipe of rectangular cross-section. The gates are linked on the pile shaft at the base by steel hinges which allow the gate to rotate at an angle of (90o).
The objective of using a pile with gates is to increase the surface area for loading and hence increase the pile bearing capacity. The test results proved the validity of the proposed piles through opening the two gates with an angle ranged between (30 – 90) o for different pile types, therefore the bearing area increased from (B2) to (12 B2) with an increase ratio of about 1100% for the piles of square cross section and increase in the bearing area from (2B2) to (18 B2) with an increase ratio of about 800% for the piles of rectangular cross section.
