Paleo-Nile
Understanding long-term records changes in the past is key to determining ‘when & if’ and ‘how far & fast’ anthropogenic climate change in this century will drive ecosystems beyond natural boundary conditions. Integrating multi-proxy, higher resolution data of both sediment and fauna (benthic invertebrates, mainly mollusks) spanning the past decades (extracted from surface sea sediments and short cores) would be the best approach to define ecological baselines to set realistic targets for the restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services, which in a fast-changing world is a top-level and high priority research for sustainable development.
