2-23-20 AG vs Orca
Awesome day for a game of rugby, with AG traveling down to Camarillo to play Orca. As usual Orca were great hosts and provided tons of rugby for everyone.
U8/10/12 all played really well as 3 fields were in play for the day….Kiera, Broden, Future, Jake, Brody, Chase, Urban, Phoenix, Ari and Chris were all standouts and all got 2 games in on the day. As there was no U14 game Elliot stepped up and joined the Orca, Santa Ynez and AG boys to do a combined 9 on 9, three 10 min period game.
U18…Once again the U18 team had a good hit out against a young but talented Orca unit. Combinations were again the difference with lots of go forward ball from the boys up front, Clay had another great game sucking in 3-4 defenders every time he touched the ball, a hallmark of his game is his ability to maintain possession in contact and fight for every inch he can get. Reed worked all day at the “Coal Face” wining and retaining ball from the set piece and open play. Co-Captain Nick along with Cole, Carsten and Tyler were all over the field, and we saw a welcome return to the field for JoJo. Caleb and Bryson had the backs humming and for all but a few handling errors throughout the backline had one of our best days yet. Elijah dropped back to fullback which gave him the opportunity to stretch his legs….which resulted in a well-deserved try.
All in all a great day for the club.
Final score 74-12
2-15-20 League Games vs Santa Maria/Kern/Ventura
U8/10….combined to plat a very fast and physical Sharks side, everyone left it all out there on the field and played exceptionally well. Hats off to a very talented Sharks team, I can’t wait to see how these kids develop over the next few years.
U12….A very seesaw contest with two great groups of kids playing with a speed physicality and skill set that has seen both groups elevate their play to another level.
U14….Joined up with the Sharks and Orca to play Ventura and Kern, all great contests with once again the level of play elevated by the sportsmanship and brotherhood on display.
U16/18…2nd official game against the Sharks and once again the participants delivered.
Sharks scored in the first 2 mins to Joe C from a great kick and chase to put pressure on the AG fullback on his own goal line….a slight mishandle and bounce of the ball and the try was made…. Things looked a little ominous as the Sharks had the wind at their back. Ag hit back right away with 3 quick tries, and the game settled down into the seesaw battle we have come to expect from these two great rivals.
Outstanding games by Caleb Tomasin, Nick Neufeld, Bryson Frank and their supporting group of players. Special mention to Devin Lewis and Joeseph Bevan, these 2 rookies have stepped up huge in the pack. Clayton Cole and his busting runs always sucked in defenders and his little brother Caleb and Jack Tacy on the wings made most of their frequent opportunities. The damage was done in the Centers with Elijah Castro (2 tries) and Grant Weissman (I try) getting their first tries for the Club and the Season. Santa Maria came back strong at the end with tries to both Magnus and Joe.
Final Score 37-22
02-08-20 “Bye Weekend” Rugby
This was a “Bye” weekend for us but we were invited to participate in the Santa Maria Sharks and Orca scheduled matches….A huge thank you to both clubs for an amazing day.
U8….We had some first time try scorers with Kiera Camacho, Broden Korth and Archer Sellers all touching down for multiple tries each and of course having to “Shoot the Boot” for their efforts.
U10/12/14….Had another typical great for the 10’s with Ari, Phoenix and Dominic leading from the front, our younger age groups all combined with both Orca and the Sharks to further the brotherhood of rugby and friendships were renewed and strengthened in the bonds of rugby.
U16/18 combined….For this game we did something a little different and separated the boys from both AG and Santa Maria that are going on the end of year tour to New Zealand into a team that faced a combined AG/SM/Orca team. The sides on paper were very evenly matched, but the Tour group got the upper hand from the beginning, led by Joe, Magnus and Zealand form the Sharks and Caleb, Cole and Nick from AG the boys got their combinations working from the outset and they scored often. This bodes well for the Tour where we will be playing against 2 New Zealand High Schools.
A great day of Rugby for all….thanks again to the Sharks and Orca for the invite.
2-1-20 League Game vs SLO
U8/10 Combined
What a great game for our combined U8/10 with all players going really well, we had some strong running by everyone……highlights would be our youngest player 4 year old Amos having a great catch and run, Future Mendoza scoring his first try and the Castro brothers Urban and Phoenix scoring 5 tries between them.. We had 3 of our players join up with the SLO team….Archer, Broden and Holden and they were stand out players for the SLO team. It was really cool to see “older brother “ Archer go up to his younger brother Amos and give him a hug after Amos had his first catch and run. Keira Camacho had another amazing game and proved that our only girl can mix it up with the boys.
U12
This was a more expansive game with both teams looking to move the ball wide, AG struck first and often with quick tries by Jake, Urban and Caden. Chase did a great job at first receiver and looked to involve the whole team with his breakout running, passing and support play. Chris had an awesome day running with ball in hand, and provided the “go forward” we needed to set the platform to keep the momentum up. Ari stepped up from U10’s to bolster the forward pack and was strong in defense and attack. Brody played a “blinder” at half back and his defense helped set the tone for the success the team had. SLO started to come back toward the end of the game, with tries to Kelvin and Jacob who played great all game.
U14
Another standout game for the U14 boys. SLO had a very big team, so the game plan was to move it wide as fast as possible, this proved fruitful as our more agile backs were able to make the most of their speed and field (this was an 8 on 8 game, full size field). SLO took advantage of their size in the scrums and were dominant in that aspect of play. Elliot led from the front with his ability to defend and pass, Charlie, Body and Caleb were unstoppable with ball in hand. We were successful at the “breakdown” and turned ball over by both “counter rucking” and being first to their feet. SLO’s size eventually started to wear AG down and were awarded with a couple of deserved tries at the end of the game, great reward for never giving up. Well done boys.
U16/18 No game…but we had a great training, thanks to the boys that showed up and put in the effort to improve.
Big thanks to SLO for a great day!
1-25-2020 3rd league game vs Central Coast Youth Rugby (Sharks)
Saturday 25th was our 3rd league hit out of the year against the Central Coast Sharks
WOW! What a day!
This was a very special weekend as both the Sharks and AG participated in the very first Annual “Bo Kelly Memorial Shield” games.
Trophies were up for grabs for all age groups with the Sharks taking the U10-12-and U14 Cups and Shield….big congratulations go out to the Sharks for playing outstandingly well. All games to that point were decided by 1 or 2 tries, well done everyone.
The High School game was one of the best I’ve seen in quite a while with AG starting strong and applying pressure for the first 20 mins and scoring two tries, the Sharks then came back really strong scoring two of their own in the final 15 mins of the half, half time score 12 – 10 to AG.
The second half was certainly a seesaw battle with both teams marching up and down the field trading tries, with 15 mins to go AG were still two points up but the momentum had swung firmly in the Sharks favor. The straw that broke the camel’s back at that stage were two quick tries by standout Caleb Tomasin (9) for AG the first of which was an opportunist intercept from a tap-kick restart off a penalty from 50 yds out his haul of the day was 3 tries and 2 conversions one from the sideline.
Co-Captain Bryson Frank (10) led the backline well playing through a painful injury sustained in the second half. Cole Nally (3) was his usual industrious self and along with Clayton Cole (1) and Nick Neufeld (2) the front row are proving to be a dominating force so far this season, Nick won all but one scrum the entire game and was taking “Tight Heads” almost at will. The loose forward trio of Luke Johnson (7), Tyler Sylvester (6) and Reed Cunningham (8) were all over the park supporting and defending well. “Rookies” Joseph Bevan (17) and Devin Lewis (18) coming on to sub at Prop in the front row did an outstanding job and kept up the solid base in the pack. We had a “Rookie” backline as well that did an amazing job with Elijah, TJ, Austin, Grant and Carsten attacking and defending well.
For the Sharks Joe Cardenas (12), Magnus Syintsakos (10) and Zealand Davis (4) were absolute beasts and led there team collectively extremely well.
Although playing different positions Joe (12 – Sharks) and Caleb (9-AG) have certainly continued their Football rivalry on the rugby field and it was great to see them stand up at the end of the game together and talk to the teams about the friendship, rivalry and brotherhood that rugby has brought to them both.
Final score 31-17
Congratulations to both clubs….can’t wait for next years “Bo Kelly Memorial Shield” weekend.
1-18-2020 League Game vs Santa Ynez/Kern County combined
Saturday 18th Jan was our second league hit out of the year against a combined Santa Ynez/Kern County
Although these 2 sides came together on the day to play AG they proved to be a formidable opponent and the game was played with Great Spirit and physicality. Once again led by Co-Captains Bryson Frank (10) and Cole Nally (3) the boys started where they left off last week, absorbing an early first half onslaught by SY/Kern to eventually score the first try 15 mins into the game. Once again the platform was set by our front row and pack along with Reed Cunningham (8) Caleb Tomasin (9) and Bryson Frank (10), the combinations that are developing through the team are proving to be the difference and along with the pressure of our defense we were able to slowly wear SY/Kern down.
Highlights of the day were provided by Bryson Frank who’s passing and running not only set the back line alight his speed saw him make a nice long range try. Caleb Tomasin kept up his try tally bagging another 3, along with his ball distribution he was also proving to be an absolute pest to the opposing half back. Cole Nally (3) got on the score sheet with a conversion (who said props can’t kick). Carsten Solorio had an immense game at inside center (12) and his bruising running and defense was the glue that held the back line together (not too bad for a converted blindside flanker). All in all another positive step but still plenty to work on….big test next week against the Sharks.
Final score 46-12
1-11-2020 1st League Game vs Orca
Saturday 11th Jan was our first league hit out of the year against Orca YRFC from Ventura County.
Orca are typically one of our toughest tests of the season. Led by Co-Captains Bryson Frank (10) and Cole Nally (3) the AG boys hit the ground running and showed that although we lost a number of starters through Graduation last season that the young players coming through certainly did not skip a beat.
Highlights of the day were provided by Caleb Tomasin (9) with a haul of 5 tries and “Rookie” Devin Lewis (4) in his very first game as a Lock scoring a great support try out on the wing. Both Captains Bryson (10) with a wonderful Pass and Loop and Cole (3) with a power run from 10 yds. out, scored respectively. Our Front Row of Cole (3) Nick Neufeld (2) and Clayton Cole (1) set the foundation for a successful day in the pack.
Reed Cunningham (8) Caleb Tomasin (9) and Bryson Frank (10) also proved the difference with plenty of ball secured and solid distribution. Our defense set the platform for the pressure that allowed us to have a successful day
Final score 60-0
