How to Learn Amharic posts videos teaching the language Amharic, as well as some video showcasing Ethiopian culture!
Aby's cousin, Selamawit (Sasi), is an English teacher in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She owns the YouTube channel, Fun With Amharic, where she occasional posts educational videos about the Amharic fidel and Ethiopian culture.
A great way to learn some extra Amharic outside of lessons is MUSIC! Ethiopian Pop music is one of the best genres out there and has so many phenomenal artists with different sounds, voices, and more. From Teddy Afro to Tamrat Desta, there are so many catchy rhythms to choose from! Click the photo (left) to listen to my curated Spotify playlist with all the best Habesha beats.
Another effective method of enrichment is watching Amharic TV shows using English subtitles. The benefits of watching Ethiopian television are endless, but mainly, it allows you to observe and identify different dialects and pick up on common slang terms and advanced vocabulary used by locals in Addis Ababa. One of the first shows that I was introduced to when I went to Ethiopia was Betoch, and I've loved it ever since. To the left provides a link to the show. Others can be found using this link here as well.
Exposure to both Amharic and English simultaneously can aid with language integration and cognitive memory. The picture to the left is an example of such literature that could be useful in comprehending language concepts outside of the classroom.
