AG-PLOUTOS COMPANY BUSINESS STRATEGY
Ag-Ploutos operates a fully integrated supply chain from seed distribution through to export sales. It recognized the need to build a sustainable supply chain in Uganda and South Sudan. By (1) Introduction of better varieties and technologies (2) Developing an efficient supply chain for producers and buyers through contract farming with the aim of providing producers with a new platform for growing various crops that are high yielding which sets the ground for the advancement of a more responsible supply chain, greater price stability and cost-effective growth.
HOW WE ACHIEVE THIS
This will be achieved by advanced technologies and innovations that improve food system and supply chains. By taking a Market systems approach, Ag-Ploutos intends to remove business hurdles, addressing yield gaps and strengthening market linkages through organized production and markets . The approach will involve working with various partners from production to market.
We bring innovations to all value chains we promote for example Ag Ploutos
Bringing innovations closer to farmers and producers.
Ag-Ploutos has a secured patent license of non-shattering sesame variety with unique traits. The high-yielding sesame seeds provide advanced organoleptic characteristics plus a shatter-resistance trait that makes them suitable for mechanized harvesting. The variety yields 6 times (1000kg-1500kg /acre) more than the local varieties and has a high oil content of 53%56% and is white seeded.
Improve access to inputs and credits.
Given that most of the farmers operate on a small scale, they cannot meet the requirements (especially collateral) for most financial institutions to access credit at relatively lower interest rates to expand their operations. Ag-Ploutus is working with various Banks to arrange a tripartite agreement between farmers, buyers and banks to facilitate formalized input credit for their out growers, thereby transferring risks of non-payment to the bank. Under this arrangement, the buyer typically negotiates a preferential rate of interest using their financial position as leverage. The buyer may also assist with processing the loan application, thereby helping the bank reduce its overheads and associated rates.
Provide access to bundle extension and mechanization services.
Ag-Ploutos and its partners (Akorion, Farasi Ensol) provide a bundle mechanization services from land preparation (ploughing), planting, weeding, harvesting, and E-extension services. Using smartphones, the village agents associated with the blocks provide farmers extension service on better agronomic practices, weather forecast (to decide on time of planting), market prices, soil testing, digital financial services - such as savings, micro credit, and crop insurance, and agro inputs.
Promote contract enforcement & quality assurance with various Partners.
Working with local government entities in selected districts and ClapperHouse, Ag-Ploutos builds both local government staff and our agents, as well as producers capacity to understand the use of contracts, including forward contracts and enforcement.
Promoting traceability mechanism to ensure consumer quality parameters are met.
We are working with Akorion, Farasi, Clapperhouse, various logistics companies and selected large processors on using digital tools that collect farmers' data, use of inputs, time of harvesting and grain processing. Traceability is essential to any integrated supply chain from field to finished goods. The final package is labeled with a unique lot number that enables tracing of the product back to the grower. Our partnership with grain cleaning facilities across the country ensure traceability from farm to warehouse to enable the company to deliver quality grains to offtakers/ buyers.
Using ICT platforms to enhance relationship-building, deliver goods and services to market actors in the most efficient way possible.
The ICT platform is being used to deliver certified seeds, fertilizers, extension, and other services including mechanization, crop insurance, market, and soil testing services to farmers. The use of ICT solutions leads to a more cost-efficient service delivery. It allows offtakers/service providers to increase the reach of their services and become more familiar with their customers—the farmers; matching demand to supply (e-trading), crop insurance, extension, digital financial services, etc.
