Frequently Asked Questions
Science and Cultural Center of FORTH
on the corners of Averof & Zografou Street, in the city center of Heraklion, Crete:
More information on the building, including accessibility information can be found here.
Getting to Heraklion:
The best airport to fly into is Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (HER). It is 20 minutes outside of the city center (within the Venetian walls).
HER is connected to most major European airports during the tourist season, which starts in May.
Flights to Athens may be cheaper, then you can take a short flight (50 minutes via Aegean Airlines or Sky Express, for example) to Heraklion. There is also a ferry to the island (note that it takes up to 9 hrs).
Taxis are available at the taxi rank outside of the airport exit. Getting to the city center via taxi should cost less than 20 Euro (typically around 18 Euro). ATMs are available at the airport exit, if you need cash. Most also accept card.
Freenow is an app for rideshare services, like Uber or Lyft. It works well in the city and can be connected to your card.
Buses are also available to the city center (Bus 1, for example; most buses take tap-to-pay or cash, it is less than 2 Euro to ride).
We recommend staying in the city center (see accommodation recommendations, below).
Getting to the Science and Cultural Center:
The Science and Cultural Center is in the city center of Heraklion, near the Heraklion Archeological Museum. Please do not go to the FORTH main building near campus and the mountains! Your commute to the meeting should be less than 25 minutes, walking.
If staying in the city center, getting to the meeting should be a 10-15 minute walk or less.
If staying outside of the city center, you will need to walk or consider public (bus)/private (taxi) transit to get to the city center and then walk to the meeting.
Google Maps can be helpful with the buses and their schedules. Buses that run near the Science and Cultural Center: 2-6. 9-12, 15, 17, 31, 50 , 91
If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to Maria (maria.charisi@ia.forth.gr) or Meg (meg@ia.forth.gr).
Heraklion city center is very walkable, there are frequent buses if you're looking to get out of Heraklion to the beaches or other cities on Crete, and is generally safe. We highly recommend staying in the city center (within the walls)!
The following are some options (in rough order of cheapest to most expensive):
Olive Green Hotel
Aquila Atlantis Hotel
Outside of the city center:
Galaxy Hotel Iraklio
3Pines Design Living
There are also many AirBNBs in the area. We are working on getting a hotel discount.
There are no registration fees to attend the conference. Additional fees for activities and food are left up to the attendee.
