Condoms are an inexpensive and accessible form of protection against STDs. It is appropriate for the elderly to be utilizing condoms because of their fixed income status and availability of this form of STD protection in local health departments, convenience stores, and pharmacies. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the barrier properties of condoms protect against genital secretions that spread diseases such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis (CDC, 2022). Research conducted by the Department of Health in Australia shows that condoms are 98 percent effective against preventing chlamydia and gonorrhea infections (Government of Western Australia D. of H., 2018). Lastly, research from a scholarly article in the National Library of Medicine concluded that correct and consistent use of condoms reduced the risk of chlamydial infection by 60 percent (Paz-Bailey et al, 2005) These statistics indicate that appropriate condom use in every sexual encounter decreases the rates of STD infection.
Our organization wanted to cater to the specific needs of our elderly population. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, font type and size is important to the readability of a document. They recommend plain font (non-cursive) and a font size of 14 points or greater. Facts must be directly and plainly written (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2016). As seen on the flyer, our organization has decided to utilize 16 point and larger non-cursive font to allow for ease of reading, included succinct facts about the advantages of condom use, inserted pictures of our organization members, and provided the telephone numbers of the local health departments should the elderly patient decided to call to inquire about obtaining free condoms.
Our organizations would place our public safety announcements in the doctor's office, at the local pharmacy, in the nursing homes, supermarket, and the convenience stores as they are places the elderly frequently visit.
