I installed AOK Gold edition on my windows 10 laptop and was able to run it in XP compatibility mode. The colours are a bit off but other than that it runs fine. You have to run as administrator and turn off UAC though. You could always dual boot with Linux and run it through wine if windows is having issues with running it, but that has some drawbacks and is harder to set up.

Well the game kind of runs, but it is extremely unresponsive and goes with around 4 fps. I first thought the game is just sluggish, but then decided to try it with old windows xp machine and it runs it very smooth.

With wine d3d for windows dll files I get the best fps, but the map view has toxic green overlay so all the color coded game locations look the same. I think the wine translates the directx functions to OpenGL.

The whole low fps thing reminds me very much of Rome Total War. I think it is also directx8 game. I remember playing it many years ago hoping that in the future we can play the game with full details and thousands of units on the battle field, but unfortunately the game runs even slower with new windows machines. Steam forums are full of speculation what is causing the lag and people offer all kinds of directx wrappers, but that is also one game that I never found a good solution with.

Used your settings file, unfortunately doesn't seem to make any difference to my felt experience, its still very choppy moving around the map / interacting with anything. With current settings it feels no different than running with native compatibility from windows.

has anyone managed to play a multiplayer game on AOE2 (or the expansion)? In my wine setup it only gives me an option to connect with DIrectPlay and I never even got that working under windows... I also have some minor mouse problems and no music (the latter also a bug in windows) but I can live with that...

Thanks for the answer, I'd considered that buy but I mostly want to play LAN with a couple of friends and you can't do that with AoE 2 hd. I guess I'll have to use my old windows 98 system if I Want to play this game or just buy the HD edition
