A mixture of grass and plaster of Paris is then packed around the base of the block to secure and stabilize it during the long cutting process .
The prepared block is then craned into position on one of four precision diamond gang saws . The calibration of these saws to less then a millimeter's tolerance is done every 20 to 30 blocks and can take up to half a day .
Each block takes around 15 hours to cut into the 16 to 18 mm sheets . Copious amount of water are needed to lubricate the cutting blades . A sophisticated filtration and recycling system means that more than 85% of water is reused .
