What is counselling?
Counselling is an "I and thou" dialogue communication between me (as a therapist) and you (as a client) , whereby we are communicating in a " here and now" moment. I communicates my phenomenological view about my inner and outer zone of awareness; while you, through the supportive, accepting, empathic, and respectful dialogical process, you become more aware about your interrelationship between your self and your environment. Through this awareness of what you are doing and how you are doing it, it shifts you from environmental support to self support, gaining back your responsibility for choice in life and finally reintegrating your disowned parts of personality. © 2022 TY Koay
How a counselling work?
First, a counsellor is interested in the whole person, which referring to client's thoughts, feelings, behaviors, bodily sensations, memories, and dreams. This means that the counsellor keens to learn about the client's wholeness response when facing their life issues.
The second aspect which a counsellor interested with is to explore what is happening at the boundary between the client's self and her environment; and how effective she regulates her boundary. The environment here is referring to the client's internal world (which is first the aspect mentioned) and the client's external environment such as family and culture.
Thing comes in to it place after the third aspect is included, the figure formation process. When an issue arise, it becomes the foreground of the client's life. Most often, client presents only the figure parts, some components of her experience such as thinking.
A counsellor is now not only interested with the figure parts of the client; he is keen also to learn about client's ground parts, components that is out of the client's awareness during her presentation of issue, such as feelings and bodily sensations. By linking these figure and ground parts, reunion of the client's disowned parts happens, and client becomes aware about her boundary between herself and her environment. Finally, awareness stimulates the client's responsibility for choice and eventually the client self regulates organismically, adjusting herself becomes healthy in the present context. © 2022 TY Koay
