Charlottesville has a small airport with direct flights to and from: Washington D.C. (IAD), Atlanta, New York (Laguardia). Another option is to fly to Washington and use ground transportation from there. It is a 2 hour drive from IAD to Charlottesville. There is also a Megabus service that might be convenient depending on your departure/arrival times.

If you are coming from the East Coast, there are plenty of places you can reach by Amtrak. There are direct trains to and from Charlottesville to D.C., New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York City.
