Afuganisu-tan and Pakisu-tan Manga Translations/Wiki

A little overview

I've done a load of research on both the manga's as well as the author, I've managed to find a couple of sites both the mangas are available on which is how I managed to buy them, so if you have any questions or want to see where they're available at just comment it down below. Also a little side note I kinda made this into a literal Wikipedia page as well. (Ps. I recommend using this in desktop mode if you are using mobile). This was a "small" project I decided to do, thanks a ton to Chimango who offered to help with the translations and suffix/prefix meanings, so credits to him aswell (Chimango). Btw ちまきing translates to Chimaki-King (as in the king of a Japanese cuisine named Chimaki), oh and here's the MAL forum where the translation discussion all started MAL Forum. (Could've made this website on Wix but google sites was much easier lol.)

Anyway here are the manga translations! (note that we don't speak nor understand Japanese, so this translation may not be in the best accuracy)(Just keep pressing the arrow button to move through chapters and also start from the first image)

Character Introductions (The author added a lot more to the characters descriptions aswell)

Character Introductions *Afuganisutan*

Character Introductions *Pakisutan*

As you read keep in mind that there's a language barrier so for some I didn't put direct translations, I put a translation that'll make sense to us fellow English speakers, so yea, basically they word things differently or use completely different expressions/phrases from what we're familiar with. I also might put alternatives in parentheses, since 1 word could have multiple different meanings when translated to English.

Gallery of official art (Thanks a lot to Chimango for providing a lot of these images), tap on the text if you wanna read

Quick Note: These images may not be in full size due to it being cramped into a small image carousal, I also left out some things (mainly website art banners) that couldn't fit into the tiny square box. However, I made an exception for some of the more interesting and relevant images. I recommend checking out the image archives on Timaking's old deleted website that I linked on the bottom of this site. Also some of these images are in the manga we've translated, and I'll be quoting the text that it came with in the manga.

Author:

The author Timaking (or known as Chimakiing in the direct Japanese translation) is long gone from the internet and stopped associating with the manga's. From what I've gathered he disappeared after he caught a virus on his computer, although I do know he had a website that was unfortunately taken down after he caught the virus, however he did sell other Afuganisu-tan themed products for an event (cookies with a character card that came with it). He was also planning on making more webcomics until the virus hit from what I also know.

Here is the Japanese Wikipedia page stating:

"On his website, he published "Afuganisutan", a four-panel cartoon that anthropomorphizes the nation, and "Pakisutan" after that.  Both works were published in book form.  The latter stopped updating after 4 episodes.

At the end of June 2005, it turned out that the computer used by the author was infected with a computer virus whose infection source was the file-sharing software Winny.  He caused a controversy on the Internet due to the leak of personal information.

The official website has not been updated at all since the leak of personal information due to the above computer virus infection was discovered, except for removing some links.  He is also silent about the series of suspicions associated with the leak.  In addition, he did not appear at the comic market where he was scheduled to participate in the circle, and the author's whereabouts after that are unknown.  The site disappeared from April 6, 2006, and as of April 2011, the host was also down.  In addition, since "Pakisutan" was published in 2008, it is presumed that he was in a state of contact with the publisher at that time."

There was also an article that mentions the following:

"Last spring in Japan, mangaka TIMAKING's webcomic Afghanistan reached heights of popularity among Japanese fans. The four-frame per serial comicstrip made the southwest Asian nation and it's neighboring countries a topic, covering the history of the region from the age of imperialism and European control in the 19th century. Following the serial's end after a short run, a sequel webmanga - Pakistan followed, it ran for 4 stories before ending. Like so many popular webmanga authors, TIMAKING was offered a chance to publish Afghanistan in print and paper. A book was scheduled to be released in Japan from Sansai Books on July 22nd, 2005, marking the author's commercial debut. At the end of June however, it was revealed the author's personal computer was loaded with the P2P software Winny and had become infected with a virus. Around 100 MB's worth of files such as documents and desktop images had flowed out onto Winny. Among them, it was found the author had downloaded copyrighted manga, Eroge and Anison, legality became a question. A list of these files were republished and the files themselves uploaded around the web on BBS's. Discussion brewed on the Internet regarding the case. After many delays the Afghanistan book was finally sold on July 26th, 2005. After the Winny episode had come to light, the author's official website was not updated and to this day, he or she has never commented on the case. Since then, TIMAKING has all but vanished from the public light, not participating in doujinshi circle meets such as Comike. The author's official website has disappeared as of April 6th, 2006."

Note!

I really liked the Afuganisu-tan manga when I first discovered it through a Tumblr post and read the webcomic. I myself am half Afghan half Pakistani so you could imagine my excitement to hear about both these comics existing lol. Then I heard about how there's a physical copy for it, aswell as an unknown sequel/spin-off called Pakisu-tan. Even though I really enjoyed reading it I do however feel like it's a bit bias when portraying the history of Afghanistan (and the other nations to an extent), especially the relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan which is a little more complex and strained than what the comic portrays (though the bittersweet aspect is still there). However the author does point this out, stating that it was hard to properly portray history without bias, it was especially hard because it was a 4 panel comic in a moe style (stated at the end letters of both manga's).

I dont like buying manga's when they're available as webcomic's but this was an exception, since the physcial copy is in color and contains a little more, with Pakisu-tan not even being available as a webcomic due to the virus the author caught in the middle of making it, forcing him to work on it in secret. The main reason I bought and translated it was seeing that everyone who was a fan of Timaking's works really wanting to see Pakisu-tan, including myself. After going on a research rampage and even messaging a whole company, it ended up being on Amazon marketplace, and as I'm writing they are still available for purchase on quite a few sites. I'll link the Amazon page to Timaking's comics down below though since that's the best place to purchase it i'd say.

Thanks for reading!

"The world history four-panel manga series, including “Afuganisutan,” is drawn with fairly simple expressions based on the idea of “getting people who are not familiar with the world situation interested.” In addition, this series has the expressive limitations of four-panel comics, and there are some parts that are slightly different from the actual historical background. Therefore, we encourage you not to assume that you have a complete understanding of world affairs just by reading this series, but to use the knowledge you have gained here to do further research on your own.

I try to create works that are as unbiased as possible, but due to the nature of the subject matter I am dealing with, I believe it is practically impossible to create a completely neutral work. If you read this series and feel uncomfortable, I sincerely apologize.

The author believes that Afghanistan's greatest tragedy is that it has been "forgotten by the international community." It would be my great pleasure if this series stimulated your interest in world affairs."

The author has also left a last message with the image

The text could also be translated to "what the heck are you guys doing..."

This picture was when I still had the newest Iphone model...

I really hope you enjoyed these manga's as much as I did. I also apologize for being a little talkative, this is just a community/fandom I really like to indulge myself in. I also wanted to answer some questions and give you some quick facts since I know there's some people as curious as I was about this.  Again if you have any questions or would like to know where to purchase them (since there's a couple of sites) just comment it and I'll answer them. Most the art in the gallery was from an archive of Timaking's official website, the rest either from blogs or other random sites. https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.yukai.jp/~timaking/afgan/*
