To support my project on multicultural and multiracial group counseling, I have incorporated insights from two key academic resources. The first, Use of Group Counseling to Address Ethnic Identity Development: Application with Adolescents of Mexican Descent by Kristina Malott, Ph.D. et al., examines the impact of group counseling on identity development for adolescents. The study involved 23 students of Mexican descent who participated in group sessions discussing topics such as discrimination, ethnic pride, and cultural values. Facilitated by three European American females with beginner/intermediate Spanish proficiency, these sessions successfully enhanced participants' ethnic pride, community connection, and understanding of their cultural identity. This research highlights the effectiveness of group counseling in fostering positive identity development in adolescents.
The second article, Review of Group Counseling and Psychotherapy with Adolescents by Leonard Blank et al., emphasizes the benefits of peer interaction in group counseling settings. While it acknowledges risks such as peer pressure and group contagion, it also outlines strategies for mitigating these challenges, particularly by ensuring skilled facilitators guide group dynamics. This reinforces the importance of trained counselors in maintaining a safe and productive environment.
Drawing from these resources, my proposed after-school counseling program offers a structured yet flexible space for students to explore their identities, build relationships, and develop valuable life skills. By combining facilitated activities with student-led discussions, this program encourages identity formation through empowering participants to share experiences, gain cultural competence, and foster empathy. School counselors can utilize this resource to create an inclusive environment that nurtures identity formation, cultural awareness, and positive peer connections among youth.
