The East End of Long Island consists of the five towns at the eastern end of New York's Suffolk County: East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Southold. When this area comes to mind, many conjure up images of glamorous summer destinations, with sprawling multi-million dollar homes and upscale restaurants and boutiques a stone's throw away from beautiful beaches. While this is partially true, what may be surprising to many is that amidst this wealth and abundance, many area residents struggle to afford basic living expenses including food and housing. Two of the five towns (East Hampton and Shelter Island) have a higher percentage of their population living in poverty than the national average (11.4%). With this area having such a high cost of living, many families experience food insecurity despite working full time.
To help visualize the extent of food insecurity and economic hardship in this area, All for the East End (AFTEE) and The Long Island Community Foundation (now The Trust - Long Island) collaborated with the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute to develop dashboards of important aspects of food insecurity and food access on the East End: participation in federal nutrition programs like school food and SNAP; access to emergency food; and neighborhood food affordability. We hope these dashboards help illustrate the need of East End's many children and families and can be used as a tool to better inform policies and programs to address this need.
