The new BA Program in African Studies at Sofia University’s Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology is Bulgaria’s one and only full-cycle program that lets you do exactly that. You’ll master English as your main language of study, add French or Portuguese as a second language, and get the rare chance to learn one or even two African languages while exploring everything from captivating literatures and oral traditions to the real-life cultural, historical, and socio-economic realities shaping modern Africa.

The eight-semester journey starts with a strong foundation: the first five semesters are taught entirely in English. Then you choose your path and specialize in Anglophone Africa, Francophone Africa, or Lusophone Africa — with all advanced courses delivered in the language of your chosen region for total immersion.

But it doesn’t stop in the classroom. You can jet off on exchange programs to partner universities across Africa and the EU experience the continent firsthand.

When you graduate, you’ll be a skilled specialist ready to make a real impact — working as a translator, cultural expert, or advisor in governmental organizations, NGOs, and cultural institutions that connect Bulgaria with Africa. Prefer the classroom? Add the optional pedagogical module and qualify to teach English + French or English + Portuguese.

As a BA graduate in African Studies, you’ll earn the professional qualification Philologist – Africanist. If you choose the pedagogical module, you’ll also qualify as a Teacher of English and French or Teacher of English and Portuguese.

You’ll reach a strong B2–C1 level (according to the European Framework) in English plus French or Portuguese — two of the world’s major languages — and gain practical skills in one or even two African languages.

On top of that, you’ll build deep, expert-level knowledge of the history, economy, politics, and vibrant cultures of African countries. The result? You’ll be a true specialist who doesn’t just speak the languages… you actually understand the continent and can navigate its complexities with confidence.
