Welcome to the virtual home of Next Steps: A Place Based Approach to Teaching African American History in Rhode Island. Next Steps is a collaborative effort of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators (DKG) Alpha Omega State (RI) Epsilon Chapter, the Feinstein School of Education & Human Development at Rhode Island College (FSEHD), and the Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS).
The collaboration begin in the fall of 2015 when a plan was developed to hold a seminar on African American History in Rhode Island during February. First Steps: An Exploration of African American History in Rhode Island was held on February 10, 2016. This year's workshop expands upon the original theme to take a closer look at the wealth of resources related to the history of African Americans in Rhode Island that are currently available to educators. The workshop will feature two keynote speakers: Dr. Nancy Bercaw, former Curator of the Slavery and Freedom Exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture and current Chair of the National American History Museum's Political History Division, will be our morning speaker. During lunch, Dr. Patricia Edwards, Professor of Language and Literacy at Michigan State University will speak on Preparing Educators Who Make a Difference in Our Diverse Communities.
We invite you to join us for day of learning and collaborating with colleagues from across the state.
