A company was interested in expanding its grocery store chain into new markets. They identified a region of interest for their expansion and were looking for locations where they could open a regional distribution centre. They have tasked me to identify parcels that fit their selection criteria and provide a summary of the cost per acre for the identified parcels.
The centre required about 400,000 square feet and will provide at least 60 full-time jobs. Because of this, the company was looking for sites that were a minimum of 20 acres to provide enough space for the building and parking. The company preferred to build the facility from the ground up, so they were looking for vacant parcels to avoid demolition costs. Additionally, the new distribution centre needed to be located within a mile of a freeway or major highway, and not be located in a flood zone.
I created a project in ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App. The projects contained layers, reports, and other map items and helped manage and organize data more efficiently. The projects also allowed me to share my work with my colleagues. My project examined community trends in Fullerton, California.
I performed some research on school location data around Arizona State and plotted the point locations on a map. Symbolized the schools using attribution data.
Data Visualization
Phoenix Public Library offers job help resources across the city at 17 library locations. They were interested in visualizing areas of high unemployment and their relationship to their current public libraries. Using demographic information available from the U.S. Census along with open data from the City of Phoenix (provided), I created a map for the Phoenix Public Library that communicates the location of its public libraries and the unemployment rate in the city.
Overlay Analysis
I did an overlay analysis for a company called Lemar Learns. They were planning to build a college preparatory academy in the City of Tempe. The company had already done research that indicated the best places to build a college preparatory academy. In my analysis, I found a census tract (or tracts) that met the following needs:
The tract had a median income of at least $70,000 – but they preferred tracts with a median income of at least $90,000.
The tract had at least 9% of its population between the ages of 5 and 14
At least 40% of the population of people were 25 and older in the tract with a bachelor’s degree or higher.
I prepared a map and a short write-up (about a page) informing the client which tract(s) to build in and why and how I developed my findings.
Model Building
I used Model Builder to analyze robberies that occurred near check-cashing businesses during times when the businesses would be open. I identified check-cashing businesses that had robberies nearby and used a combination of geoprocessing tools to complete this work. For the analysis, I identified robberies that occurred near check-cashing facilities during times when they are open. I assumed that they were open every day except Sunday, with hours between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM. I used data from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
