BANDAR MAHARANI
RIVER PURIFICATION CENTRE
Redefining Aquaculture as Purification System
Due to water pollution in Sungai Muar, as many as 30,000 people in the local community faced a water crisis that caused the water supply to be cut off. Natural habitats that are heritage in Sungai Muar such as oysters and Udang Galah Sepit Biru are also affected. The quality of Sungai Muar has fallen in Class III in Water Quality Index and can be classified in dangerous conditions. A joint effort from SAJ and I-Aquas and oyster experts in Muar, a water purification system that uses oysters as the main component has been introduced in a research center located next to the Muar River to facilitate the water purifying process itself. The aim is to enhance the quality of Muar River until get to Class I. The function of the oyster, which is well known as a natural filter, is very helpful in saving energy and electricity for the continuous water filtration system. The research centre is very necessary because of the importance of testing the quality of oysters and the Muar River from time to time. Oysters can also be bred on a large scale and sent evenly along the Muar River using modular nets; they are expected to be developed along the Malacca Strait in the long term.
