Afghan Tutoring Network
Since 2021, many young Afghan girls and women living within the repressive grip of the Taliban have been denied an education past grade six. In 2023, an opportunity arose to assist these young girls and women when an Afghan student at Middlebury College collaborated with educators in the community and abroad to create the Afghan Tutoring Network committed to the continuity of Afghan girl’s and women’s education. This led to the initiation of a project with two core objectives:
1.) Providing internet-based technology, and access to impoverished girls
2.) Offering structured online tutoring.
The project aims to provide education opportunities to a diverse group of 20 to 25 students, aged 13 to 29 years (7th grade to post graduate), from various regions of Afghanistan who have been denied access to education. Each student is paired with one to two dedicated tutors who engage one to two weekly sessions lasting for approximately 1 to 2 hours each. The tutors provide individualized support and guidance to ensure optimal learning experiences for the students.
Afghan Tutoring Network ~ Goals
The overarching goal of the project “Afghan Tutoring Network: Empowering Afghan Girls through Access to Online Education" is to make a positive impact in the lives of underprivileged Afghan girls who are denied access to education due to the oppressive circumstances in their country. The Afghan Tutoring Network aims to address the following specific goals:
Access to education: By offering financial assistance, mentorship, and tutoring, we are able to address educational and social barriers faced by Afghan women and girls. We hope to be a catalyst for change, enabling Afghan girls to become influential leaders and change-makers.
Providing Internet Access: Many impoverished girls in Afghanistan lack internet connectivity, which prevents them from accessing online educational resources. The project seeks to facilitate internet access for these girls, enabling them to overcome the barriers imposed by their remote locations and limited resources.
Providing Technology: The project recognizes the lack of access to technology, such as laptops or smartphones, as a significant obstacle for Afghan girls in pursuing online education effectively. To mitigate this, the project aims to provide the necessary technology to make online education more accessible and sufficient for the girls.
Structured Tutoring: The project offers structured tutoring sessions to supplement and help guide female students’ online learning. This personalized support aims to help them excel academically and to receive the necessary educational skills to succeed.
The primary goal is to teach English, enabling students to communicate effectively during the program. Therefore, it is essential for both tutors and students to demonstrate a high level of commitment to the program. Success depends on the dedication and active participation of all involved parties.
