Undergraduate research school in Pure Mathematics for women and other underrepresented genders in Mathematics
15th - 19th June 2026
University College London
The metaphor of the leaky pipeline is frequently used to describe the decrease in the proportion of women in Mathematics at each stage of the academic career path. The statistics are particularly poor in Pure Mathematics. For example, at UCL, women make up 37% of PhD students in Applied Mathematics but only make up 24% of PhD students in Pure Mathematics. One of the largest decreases in the number of women is between the undergraduate/Masters level and the PhD level.
This summer school aims to tackle this problem by providing female undergraduate students with an interest in Pure Mathematics the opportunity to learn about advanced topics and to complete a small research project with an academic mentor over the summer. This will all be complemented by social activities, current PhD student panels, and discussion groups focused on mathematical careers and PhD applications.
If you are unsure whether you would like to do a PhD, then you are exactly the person this program is for...
